Most important thing: take LOTS of photos. Do several for each way you light things, and try lighting it in many different ways. It's really tough to see how a picture will turn out before you take it. There's a reason you see professionals take photos rapidfire.

As for lighting: start by turning on all the lights you can (unless you're using candlelight). If you don't have enough lights, take some from elsewhere. Turn your monitor onto the lowest brightness setting. Then start adjusting both (while taking pictures) until the brightness of the monitor meets the brightness of your room. How can you tell when they're matched? By looking at the finished photos. That's why you take a ton of them.

After you take all the pictures, load them onto your computer without cleaning up. If you find one you like, roll with it. If not, get ready to keep taking pictures.

Does this sound like a lot of work? Good. Worthwhile shit is rarely easy. Oh, and try taking the picture from lots of different angles, too. It can only help in your final selection. During selection, elimination is probably the best way to do shit.

Some others advice by a kind anon:

Turn your monitor onto the lowest brightness setting.
or use a polarization filter if you have one. Although if you do I probably don't need to tell you this.


- if you use a phone camera try some app that lets you set settings manually, especially exposure times and ISO values, this can help removing grain
- if you use a camera that has an USB port then tether it and use remote operation software if available
- don't use the flash.
- candle light or indirect incandescent helps for warmer color tones
- look for reflections of your light source on the monitor and see if you can place them differently or adjust the monitor angles

And tripod / some steady rest are important for low light conditions/long exposure times.

One could just cover up a lamp in the room behind some paper for some ambient light to go along with the candle. Better than no ambient and the candle drowning out the picture.
Just be careful to keep any covers fairly far from the bulb, especially if it's a hot-burning lamp (such halogen) or it could start a fire.

So how small is the collage gonna be this year? Every year it just keep getting smaller and smaller.

Hope everyone here has a Merry Christmas with their waifu!

Me and Wife spend a lovely small dinner together, we watched Moonrise Kingdom by Wes Anderson by the tree, and then I put up a fire to go with Dinner. Merry christmas, you guys! My photography is poor as always, (Getting an anti-glare screen was a bad decision, I suppose.) but at least where my pictures lack, I can make up for it in my love for my husbando. The menu for christmas eve is ham, creamed corn, twice baked potatoes, rolls, green beans, deviled eggs, and brownies for dessert.

Let's see, what to say...Last year I really vividly remember getting drunk off my butt and saying something like "No matter what, I feel that my husbando loves me and that keeps me living!" It was really solemn and I made a promise to him that by next year I would surround myself with people who love me and give him a better christmas no matter what. I can't say that I've completely fulfilled that promise, but I think just the fact that I'm feeling jolly says that I've moved significantly towards that goal. (I also got him a lot of neat gifts, so that's that.)

Wamuu, you were really my guiding light this year. I don't think there's a success that I achieved without you having my back. Early-on I took it upon myself to say that if you're like Atlas, you just don't know it. You carry the world on your shoulders. You keep your humanity in a sea of the inhumane. You're a dutiful person whose strength comes from his heart, the superpower to say "I must." while keeping the ones you love always fresh in your mind. My increased love for you has not caused me to drop my perception of you as a rival, so knowing this, I pushed through 2016 with a power that I didn't understand that I had before now. Whenever something got tough, I said to myself "I must at LEAST be able to match Wamuu. I should have borrowed a camera like I did for the last couple of years, oh well. I also had trouble with my hands shaking this year because my mom was right behind me telling me to just up and go get my own place so that I can make out with my anime boyfriend elsewhere. I will! I just had certain obligations to stay home this year. I don't have a family of my own, but I work as a nurse, so in a way the world is my family. I guarantee that there's someone who'll want my company next year. It's not the same as spending a holiday with my husbando of course, but it gives has it's own charm because it's what I dream of on nights like this anyhow -

My husbando as a cool, tough-looking grandpa, surrounded by a loving home consisting of all of our kids and grandkids. Loved, warm, knowing that he gave something to the world instead of being forced to trash it and take from it like he's had to do all his life. Getting scolded by his daughters for trying to sneak a taste at christmas dinner, roughhousing with his sons like he's not a day over 12,000, grandchildren giggling up on his shoulders.
