Can we talk about The Voynich Hotel? I just marathoned it and wondered what /a/ thought.
>>151367793
Amazing. Ending was obviously rushed though.
A masterpiece. Unique talent.
How many parodies did you notice?
>>151367793
It was nice to see a cute brown girl that actually made it with the MC
>>151368021
Douman said on twitter that Elena was a copy of Marona from Phantom Brave which was a PS2 game.
Phantom Brave is now on Steam. That's a good video.
Little brown witches are the best.
>>151367793
Charming but I don't love it like most people here. That sniper chapter was amazing though.
Its popular in OPTs, just like Nickelodeon, which is also great.
>>151368028
One of the best brown girls I can think of.
>>151368021
You missed the most blatant one.
>>151367793 have started reading it 2 weeks ago because i thought the same guy who did sayonara zetsubo sensei also did this... well that wasn't the case but it was still a pleasant surprise even though i'm still not totally in the know of how the authors ticks
>>151368849
Which one? Seems like there are many I didn't notice.
>>151369154
The yakuza boss is Mazinger.
One of the more enjoyable reads. Read it all in one go one day after an anon was dumping it.
>>151367863
Not really. It was slice of life.
>>151367793
Did they fuck?
>>151368021
I only caught Vegeta and Nappa
only cause they blatantly stated it.
>>151369804
Yeah
a whole chapter dedicated to it.
>>151369804
Not on that date, if I remember correctly, but eventually yes. A lot.
>>151369804
You must not have read the manga. They outright fuck a little over halfway through it.
>>151369910
chapter number?
what's douman doing these days anyway? is oddman 11 over?
>>151369994
Oddman is still going, and he writes oneshots and Ayame to Amane chapter from time to time.
>>151369987
Just read the whole fucking thing you dummy, the chapters aren't even that long
>>151370218
right on
not a huge fan of A&A but douman does love them lesbians so he can keep doing what he loves
and honestly I think his oneshots are his best stuff
>>151369206
Updated
Absolute fave of all time. Wish someone made this into a movie.
It bugs me. Are Taizou and his "bro" in gay relationship?
>>151367793
I like Nickelodeon more, the chapter about care bears was 10/10.
gonna dump some nickelodeon unless someone objects violently in which case i probably will continue anyway
>>151370594
...what?
>>151367793
>yfw he actually did
>>151370889
No, they're actually brothers.
>>151371115
>>151369994
>what's douman doing these days anyway?
He's starting a new oneshot series like Nickelodeon in Ultra Jump and a new serialized one in Young Champion Retsu (pic related, same magazine where Voynich ran), both next month.
>>151371175
>>151370218
>Ayame to Amane
The hell you're talking about, I clearly remember a thread where anon translated the final chapter.
>>151371254
>>151371241
>a new oneshot series like Nickelodeon in Ultra Jump
oh fuck color me excited
I read Suicide Parabellum.
It looked like the MC was trying to save the girl but from what? suicide?
I still don't really understand what it was about but it definitely looked cool.
Preview for the new oneshot series, it'll have two chapters in the first issue.
If no one else does it I'll at least try and get Babylon translated, I loved Voynich. Maybe Melancholia too but that depends more on if I like the first chapters.
>>151371316
>>151371241
>SF (Spacy Fuck) Adventure
>>151370594
Good. What a bizarre but poignant story. No onc can create a piece like this in four pages other than Douman. It's almost like Haiku.
>>151371362
>>151371367
I wonder if that isn't what he's going for
it's less a story and more a sensory impression
like a complex feeling described in 4 pages
sorry if I get pretentious, i'm a couple beers in
>>151371241
And we have to wait another 9 years for this series to finish.
>>151371241
I didn't know about his new Restsu serialization, thanks. Natalie's RSS hasn't posted anything so I missed this.
>>151371507
>>151371576
What with this guy and landmines?
>>151371576
if thread is still up when i get back from food i'll dump some more, if not, have a good night
>>151371334
Supposedly we're getting a tank in the Spring, but he also said that last year when I asked him about it. I think it's actually finished now, though.
>>151371525
That's weird. They did post about Retsu, but skipped on Ultra Jump one.
>>151371758
They also didn't post about a few of his Comic Birz stories, so I find it's better to just ask.
I still have a box of his old doujinshi to scan. I bought an old Dorohedoro one of gis recently.
>>151368626

Voynich Hotel>Oddman 11>Nickelodeon>Sexual Instinct and the Hydrogen Bomb War
All god tier though, not to mention the various one-shots.
I'm a huge fan of his works. But what do you think is his appeal? His cartoonish art style and otaku pandering parodies? Weird fetishes combined with sad feelings?
>>151377808
The weirdest stories with cute characters.
And this might sound strange but I think the guy draws the best smiles. You can just feel the happiness.
>>151377808
Pretty much what you mentioned. Heartwarming romances mixed with unabashed fetishism and refreshing humor, plus a bit of weestaboo influence that never hurts. You just get the feeling he draws only whatever the fuck he wants and enjoys.
>>151378120
>>151378339

The Pulp Fiction of manga. I love Dowman to bits, both his distinctive style and his writing.

?

>>151385009
no,
>genki wins over everyone
is internet shorthand for her personality was charming enough to make up for the initial lack of physical attraction
you can watch him noticeably warming up to her over the series as they spend time with each other
don't be silly anon, tonight isn't a night to bait the hooks
>>151385097
>don't be silly anon, tonight isn't a night to bait the hooks
Sorry, m8. Wasn't trying to b8, it was just something that's been bugging me for a while and I forgot that genki was an archetype. Thanks for the breakdown, though.

Dowman Sayman is by far the greatest mangaka.
That said, Nickelodeon is somehow even better than The Voynich Hotel, in my opinion.

>>151385881
I'm sorry, what?
>>151388788
his earlier stuff provides even less of a conclusive ending than usual
don't think of it as a story with beginning, middle and end.
it's just a brief window into something weird. a bite-sized snack of feelings.
>>151387052
What hotel did most of that arc take place in again?
>>151388788
Mexican Wrestler Witches.
That's it.

a series of interconnected stories about witches(?), yakuza, bounty hunters, serial killers, and war orphans on a no-name tourist trap island in the tropics.

The fetishes and such are always amusing but there's always some heart behind what he does. His works have a feeling of serene melancholy that can be simultaneously comfy, funny and sweet in a very dark way without ever feeling like it's veering off into edgelord or shock territory.
Does anyone know any other stuff similar to Dowman's work?
The only other manga I've read that gives off the same charming feeling is Dorohedoro and Blood Diver Ringo and the Goldfish Bowl Man.
>>151370218
Ayame to Amane is over.
He recently started a new series i dont remember the name of and then there's also Suicide Parabellum
>>151394488
was actually going to mention Abe but you already got me with Chimoguri Ringo
Daidai wa Hantoumei ni Nidonesuru also by Abe is pretty similar to Nickelodeon in the sense of "interconnected stories of brief weirdness that leaves you with mixed bittersweet funnysad feelings"
>>151394488
Everything by Abe Youichi, yeah. Other than that, I guess there's Hisa Masato, but his stories aren't really similar, just the Hellboy-guy artstyle influence.
Disney or some French bande dessiner company should fund him and give him some years of time for him to create anything freely. He is a genuine genius.
>>151393668
this one has always been one of my favorites from dowman
>>151394672
Yeah, a blatantly romantic piece.
>>151394671

i mean yes he deserves the $ and freedom to be able to write/draw what he wants, but
i don't think that one's gonna happen
>>151385815
Is this the same as that? Too lazy to check them all.
>>151394745
most of his stuff is blatantly romantic
just not in the conventional way
I'm not sure if his comics interesting for English speaker. Because I think verbal plays that he uses for manga is one of the fun.
>>151395105
I didn't know Japanese at all when I read him, and it was still more interesting than plenty of alternatives.
He is surely a westaboo and doesn't give a fuck with scanlation. This is his tweet from a couple days ago. He uses scanlation pics to announce the issue of Oddman 11 comic tank.
https://twitter.com/dowmansayman/status
/811170954004951040
Also he rarely responds on twitter when his reader talks to him in Japanese, but when asked in English, he responds politely. I think he enjoys his over the sea reputation.

>>151395200
He responds to Japanese, but he responds to English more regularly I think. And he likes having his manga translated, I've asked him about it before. He also helped me find some of his older doujinshi before, which was nice of him.
>>151396815
That's too noice of him.
>>151367793
I liked what little I read, because fuck yeah dowman sayman, but I read it back when it was still only partially translated and never finished it. I ought to pick it back up now that it's done, thanks for reminding me OP.
Voynich Hotel is one my favourites.
Anything by Douman Seiman is usually pretty great.
I spent hours and hours on /a/ scanning the first volume of Voynich and for a while brought the magazine and scanned in the chapters.
