It's one of the best animated TV Series from the 80s. Starts out ok, but starts to get really impressive as the show goes on. It peaks in the movies.

The animation is actually fairly weak in the beginning... aside from random scenes featuring military hardware around the point where Mendou debuts (episodes 10 or 11, I think).

The animation constantly improves throughout the show's run, although obviously it's not perfectly consistent since it's a long running show.
