I watched some of the anime, only. I was instantly more interested in Shiro than any other character.
However. I did read some of the manga and I thought it was pretty well put together.

Well the first half of the manga is pretty good and well written, after they left the prison the writing starts to become a cliched mess. Final battle ends in an anticlimax with Shiro stopped fighting,but it's honestly pretty good and touching to boot. Also it got an actual ending.
