This was insufferable for me personally because everytime they mention muse and how they want to be like them, just reminded me how they are just shallow copies and that I miss the original. If they had tried to do something different and maybe had like 1 or max 2 references to muse then at least they tried something. But Sunshine feels like a stale reboot at best. At least the animation and girls are always nice to look at.

Dia didn't want them to form a school idol club because she didn't want the girls to experience the failure that she did and that's why Mari, being an optimist, wanted to test the girls and push them, and see if maybe they had what it took to do what they could not. As someone who follows more than just the anime, I can say with absolute certainty that they will give Kanan some development in S2 now that her popularity has sky rocketed.

Now, and it isn't very likely, but if Sunshine did potentially get an S3, then every girl would definitely get some decent development. If Sunrise knew Love Live was going to blow up, they probably would have made more seasons of the anime, because it would have sold great and honestly, 24 episodes is not enough to properly develop 9 characters.

Muse had 3 years of extra character material before the anime came out. It's understandable that they would end up retconning some things for the anime because the characters and setting were a work in progress prior to the anime.

Aqours on the other hand were planned to get a full TV anime from the start. They should have had a much better grasp on what the characters would have ended up like and communicated those ideas to every side of the branch. Instead they went about it in a half-assed way developing the characters in contradicting ways without any input or communication between the branches of the franchise and as a result we got all kinds of weird stuff that were cut out in the anime like Mari being Italian and the YoshiRiko pairing.

It's honestly disappointing to see the lack of passion and love put into Sunshine. The whole purpose of side franchise materials is to give us a preview of what the characters are like, not deceive us into thinking we'll get something that will ultimately be retconned.

I disagree with that, if only because the Yoshiko episode makes her look schizophrenic. Like someone seemed to forget that in order to make internal conflict compelling, you actually need to have insight into their own mentality.

Instead Yoshiko ends up spending 20 minutes complaining about her Chunni facade before quickly jumping back into character again. Then she finally resolves to give it up (and without any proper insight as to why she'd be conflicted) it actually comes off as a reasonable resolution, since all the viewer actually sees is Yoshiko supposedly suffering.

Then Aquours turns up, tells her to get back in character - because it's convenient for the group - and she spends the rest of the series being the butt of the joke.
