>>
>>151212953
>Watch how their only criticism is that it's mediocre and it's a shinkai without expounding what's wrong with it.

I like Shinkai's other stuff, Your Rope is about as good as Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo. An alright movie, clearly with a good director behind it, but a flawed narrative that ultimately leaves you with nothing more than "it was a movie, I guess".

Musubi is a great scene ruined by the plot of the rest of the film. Instead of being a character building moment that could have been expanded upon, it's just dumping information on you so that you're not supposed to question everything happening in the latter half, especially katawaredoki.

Mitsuha and Taki aren't bad leads, but their characters needed a ton more development. If this had been a character focused movie like 5cm/s or Garden of Wallpapers, rather than having the characters in service of the plot, it could have been great. It's especially noticeable when Taki is just suddenly in love with Mitsuha. It's not completely unbelievable, but if we had been shown them actually learning about each other instead of having to fill in holes because Shinkai opted for a montage instead of adding another ten minutes to the film.

The last ten minutes when they're adults is awful. It's full of fanservicey scenes showing us what happened to everyone (like a summary in some dumb book for teenagers) and pulls me out of the characters completely with the bit on the stairs. Yeah sure, these two have been running around Shinjuku station for the last fifteen minutes looking for each other and the moment they see each other at the other end of the stairs they'll just walk by each other? Fuck that. It's so unbelieveable I could barely watch it. Shinkai's writing usually isn't so awful and forced, but he wanted to bait everyone by making them mad for a bit, and in the process made me feel angry about the whole movie.
>>
>>151213057

>>

>>

DVD vs BD is about a $10 difference, and upgrading even a modest physical media collection would cost thousands, so a lot of Japs stick with DVDs as long as they'll need a player for their older stuff.

>>
>>151214623
TOHO planned to air it to at least January.
>>
>>151214677
I'm not saying they should abandon collections, you can still keep your old player. I used my VHS deck for ages after we had a DVD player, often as to record stuff since DVRs cost a fortune then.

A decent BD player from Sony or Samsung is like a ~$100. The $10 per disc is a decent argument, since that adds up, but I think the industry could easily sell BDs for $10 less and still make a healthy profit. Likely the reason there is such a difference is because they still have to keep releasing in a legacy format. Makes a great excuse to charge more for the more current format.

Price elasticity of demand means that reducing prices won't necessarily increase sales. Profit is maximized when PED is exactly 1:1. >>151215217
Have you studied monopolistic competition yet? Price fixing is rife and legal in Japan. Books and CDs legally cannot be discounted by the retailer, and the publishers apply the same logic to DVD sales.
There's also an element of pride, in that Japanese BDs are almost always higher quality releases- not enough to justify the difference in price, but enough to make them "luxury" goods.
The American industry went through the same shift. DVDs were originally sold at ~$80 a pop, because the intended market was rental stores and collectors. It took years and years to recognize the value of the mass market.

You're also assuming that it's possible to measure elasticity without harming the market. You can't just raise and lower prices willy-nilly to test consumer reaction without alienating people.
>>
>>151207220
Because I like being a contrarian.

It doesn't dump info on you at all, it explains things without making it feel like some sort of info dump, it's was in-gauging and interesting how to decided to give us info.

The real issue with info-dumping scenes is that they usually happen at the start of a show, before we even care about anything, or they are extremely boring blocks of dialogue.

The information is in the scene only so that viewers know later on that time can be variable in this movie and is supposed to make them accept the time difference and katawaredoki. It's not there to make the setting any more interesting or to expand Taki's character.

>This movie does neither, you're really just grasping for straws anon

What if, here me out... what if Your Name. pulls a 2016 Republican Primaries and the latter 4 movies all have their votes divided against each other while Kimi no Na wa. rakes in the majority of the votes?

>Watch how their only criticism is that it's mediocre and it's a shinkai without expounding what's wrong with it.

The ending lasted for about 4 scenes too many.

The sudden ability for the two leads to meet at the same time (effectively introducing time travel within the last half an hour) was contrived and ruined the suspense of the finale

There was no reason for the male lead to be rushing at the end, he had no clock to beat. His mission was to travel back in time and warn the girl, who had to beat the clock, but he had all the time in the world.

The fact that the leads forgot about one-anther opened a plethora of other questions which were instantly undermined when they suddenly could remember each other during the epilogue.

The memory wipe plot device extended onto each of their phones, that's fucking dumb.

The majority of the first half of the film followed the girl and the crux of the finale was following drama surrounding her, therefore it was bizarre that the second act was dedicated almost entirely to the male lead who we had no reason to care about and who would functionally play of merely the messenger of death role during the final action sequence.

This silly romantic comedy had a "final action sequence" at all

Themes of gender divide and the difference between rural and urban lifestyles in Japan were opened but not explored adequately whatsoever, neither character confront the failing of either way of living but rather the distinction could be narrowed down to "I have boobs now", "city living is expensive".

The majority of these are narrative or structural problems because I do believe this is Shinkai's best written film and best composed visually, unfortunately his tendency to adapt silly action/science fiction stories ruined what would have served better as a humble little love story a la Garden of Words.

Couldn't he time travel at any time? The whole time travel mind thing was arbitrary and contrived, as I pointed out, but surely he could have transported back in time at any point? It was already 3 years past the "event", is there something I'm forgetting that meant he could only travel back at that exact time? If that's not the case then he was rushing around and the film was creating this illusion of suspense when in actuality he could have travelled back at his leisure.

I get that he was passionate about her but the first half clearly had a greater emphasis on the female lead and the finale hardly involved the male lead at all, certainly didn't involve him to any mortal or dramatic degree. He was simply a messenger, and once his role in the finale was done he had no other role to play in the film. This followed about 30 minutes of exclusively following that character. It really reminded me of the second episode of 5cm Per Second, which is still good but nothing about the rest of the film would inform any kind of investment in this character over that of the other leading character. Not only was the film previously framed more prominently around the female lead, but the female lead had the greater stakes in the finale. The fact that the male lead played such a prominent role in the second act diminished our investment in the female lead as a character but rather as a distant object to protect.

This would be a lot less confusing if I could be assed to google the names of the protagonists kek.

You're probably right about the last part desu.

Oh but shit I just remembered something so maybe you can explain it. Do you remember that scene when the dude called the female lead and obviously she didn't pick up because it was 3 years in the future and she was meant to be dead. But then of course she lives in the end, why didn't she pick up the phone when he called? Is this just a paradox or an actual fuck up?
>>
>>151220756
I'm with >>151220845. They're going to pick wherever they get dragged in by their children to see. I have no faith in the judging committee that they're going to do an exhaustive review.

Compared to the Disney movies, Kimi no Na wa did have considerable cultural baggage.
>>
>>151222111
She was dead according to a book that had a list of casualties. I think Taki was able to change his present such that the town would still be destroyed but with only a minimum of injuries.
>>

>>
What if, you know Kubo or Zootopia are just better films?

Zootopia will win anyways.
>>
>>151222651
Kubo is good.

Zootopia is just another normal Disney film.
>>
>>151222111
OK, I quite agree with you that the film didn't invest on Taki enough to make his role has a weight enough for every audience.
After they stop swapped, Taki could think that something wrong might happened in Mitsuha's side so he wanted to find her again asap.
And I also wanted to add that, least for me, it looks like when he swapped with Mitsuha, not just her but he also had and attachment with the town and people. That's why the scene where he stopped at Itomori picture during the date sequence give the sense of longing (Well, at least for me again. I admitted that this scene wasn't strong enough to convince the audience.

And for the last point, you don't need to think that much about the time-paradox since this point is too open to fill in anything. For example, in Japan the mobile network will sell the number together with phone, so, when you change your phone your number will change. That's why Mitsuha can't call or mail Taki: because he used the different phone at that time.
>>
>>151222651
Zootopia is just another generic disney film.
>>
>>151223358
I see what you mean with the longing of the village, though that would have been a lot more effective had the film spent more time during the first act where they are just switching. With that said I am quite bias that that was by far my favourite part of the movie. Structurally the film would have functioned a lot better had it been a 12 episode series: the switches between protagonists would have been facilitated through different episodes, more time would be given to the mundane first act, there would be a slower more natural escalation of stakes and a more fleshed out detective second act.

No. Where in the movie was it ever stated that the characters had control over when the bodyswapping happens?

>the male lead played such a prominent role in the second act diminished our investment in the female lead as a character but rather as a distant object to protect
False. The second half is essentially passing the baton to each other, triggered by their very first meeting. Turkey needed to close the loop, whereas 3ha completed it.
>>
>>151223622

>False
You're actually slow, the second act not only dropped one character almost entirely but the tone changed drastically so that when said character would return it's as though they're in a completely different movie. She became an idea for the lead to pine over rather than a character for us to sympathise with, which undermines our investment in the finale because it is almost exclusively about a character who had previously been given a secondary role.

One thing I don't like about the movie is that Mitsuha voice is inconsistent throughout the movie.
At the start, she seemed to be chilled out type from her voice and behaviour. But after the comet, her voice sounded sweeter (higher pitch?). Was this intended to show the audience that she was in love at that point? It's not a big flaw but just it's a little bit difficult for me to imagine how these two intereract after the end of the movie.
>>
>>151225233
What after the comet.

When they finally met each other during Kataware-doki?? Because if that's the part then yes, her voice was sweeter to show she's in love really.

Her VA actually fell in love in that part when they were voicing that part. She said it was so sweet.

If you are talking when they were older, then yeah as well. She was in deep melancholy. Bitter longing. In one word, both of them were in saudade when they were older.
>>
>>151224230
>my opinion on a movie is "false"
This is not an "opinion":
>the male lead played such a prominent role in the second act diminished our investment in the female lead as a character but rather as a distant object to protect

It's a fact which you are claiming. And that claim is false as 3ha was neither an "object to protect" (literally when did Turkey mention the word "mamoru"?), nor was her role in the 2nd half any less prominent than Turkey's. Learn the difference between facts and opinions.

>She became an idea for the lead to pine over rather than a character for us to sympathise with
Completely false. It's like you stopped watching after Katawaredoki.

>name one thing you don't like about the movie
The Zenzenzense insert sequence was rushed.
>>
>>151225233
>her voice sounded sweeter
That happens when someone came inside her, fondle boobs and drink her sake.
>>
>>151227064
Sweet, so your retort to me pointing out structural problems with the film is to say that I'm wrong. I point out the infallible logic that a character being featured less prominently in a story results in their conflicts resonating less with the audience, and your response is that I'm wrong without any citations of theory or examples within the film proving that fact. Shinkaifags, ladies and gentlemen.
>>
>>151228282
It's not a structural problem inherent to the film. Rather, it's your inability to understand the structure the film is built around, and instead push you own agenda on what you think the film should be about.

>a character being featured less prominently in a story
Again, this is false. 3ha and Turkey had roughly the same amount of screentime. You only feel 3ha had more screentime because the bit before the first bodyswap was slower paced than the parts after.
>>
>>151224230
>for all we knew he could have time travelled at any time.

Your problem is that you're thinking it foremost as time travel. It isn't. It's body switching and their age is the primary factor that determines it ("Taki is a boy my age living in Tokyo"). That along with Taki's question irt the Miyamizu's is suppose to tell you that Mitsuha was the one triggering it and if you remember, it only happens once more after Taki takes in "the half" of her she left behind. He actually should have been switched at a later time but because it was something he forced Musubi realigned him to the last day she was alive.

So basically no, Taki couldn't have time traveled to any time.
>>
>/a/ Arguing logically back and forth and causing a shitstorm over a romance film
> Romance film
Come on, can we just all agree that this movie was made for the heart more than the mind? And look forward to it possibly attaining 500million $ and becoming a gateway anime, let's support this, and the people saying it kinda "dragged" in the end is probably Shinkai trolling his movie fans rather than going for a perfect movie to satisfy you, Shinaki really made this with his heart in mind and even they thought it will only make 6billion yen, I'm happy for the Your Name staff and they deserve all of this for making a movie this good.
>>
>>151224230
>the second act not only dropped one character almost entirely but the tone changed drastically so that when said character would return it's as though they're in a completely different movie.

Not really. A specific melancholic theme song (Mitsuha's Theme) tied to her and two other variations of it (Date and Date 2) are played throughout the rest of movie that's suppose to remind you of her presence. Also I don't know when the second act started for you but she has a fair amount of screen time in it so as not to be relegated to a secondary character. The reason why she was "dropped" was to create an air of mystery as to why the body switching stopped so I'm not quite sure how you came to the conclusion that she turned into an idea. Even then that's not entirely bad as we're suppose to sympathize Taki as well.

The reason for that is because the film had many cuts which don't make sense upon reflection as a whole and only became passable because you finally know it's designed like that to manipulate the spectator's emotion. It's a cheesy youth drama like the first rage guy said above. I personally don't care (I even think it's good) if it tops off Spirited Away, since it has cute stories, Shinkai-ing, breathtaking animations, and all. Spirited Away is good but also overrated as hell because it's supposedly the highest-grossing anime film of all time.

I mean, there's that DOOON like Nolan films or One Piece IIRC, lol. It's a flick and doesn't pretend to be anything other than that.

The sad truth is that it's most likely that Zootopia would get the Oscar. Message about tolerance and inclusiveness, cute cartoon animals, it practically has the award in the bag at this point.
