Japan sees all foreign religions as magical cults without ever attempting to understand them. Look at Michiko & Hatchin, where the (clearly Roman Catholic) priest owns his own church and is married with a family. This how things generally work in Japanese Buddhism, so they assume Christianity is the same but with magical powers.

It's better this way. Unlike Worst Korea they haven't been cucked by Christianity yet. They see it as something exotic, without converting to it or allowing churches to multiply inside their cities to act as centers of foreign propaganda. Stopping its influence right on its tracks back in the day was one of Japan's best decisions historically.
