That's more Mashima explaining why Irene has such disrespect for love and bonds that Hisui's and her father's offended her, and why she was ready to start torturing Mirajane by disfiguring her. She presumably loved her husband, and he said he loved her. Only for him to easily turn on her the moment she came down with an illness that made her ugly.
