Since Shinkai is about to surpass Spirited Away and his old employees have set up their own studio without him for a new movie, has Miyazaki become irrelevant?
>>
No.
Even if he eventually stopped making new stuff, his legacy will keep him relevant for a very long time.
>>
He's unretiring for the 4th time or something and planning on a new film

All those animators will flood back to his side if he does guaranteed
>>
Their both retards who only know how to make one kind of movie. miyazaki was at least a little creative in his early years. this is the japanese way, spend your whole life refining and training with one katana, then die. the stubborness is now neither interesting nor fashionable
>>

>A few highly praised scenery porn romantic drama anime movies
versus
>many of the greatest animated works of the past few decades, someone who's inspired countless others to create for themselves
Doesn't seem like much competition honestly.
>>
>>151149446
>Their both retards who only know how to make one kind of movie
Hey, buddy fuck you.

Miyazaki actually knew how to create two kinds of movies, "Muh environment is good & war is bad" movies, and cheerful magical realism kids movies

This

first post best post as always
>>
>when you stop working you become irrelevant
Only in sports.
>>
Did Charlie Chaplin or Orson Welles become irrelevant when they stopped working and were outsold?
>>
>>151152851
>Chaplin
>Relevant after talkies

Anon, please
>inb4 but my great dictator
Only thing he's really remembered for and it was in sound and politically relevant unlike most of his other works.

>Orson Welles
>Not completely irrelevant shortly after the camera work and storytelling of his magnum opus were advanced
That's like saying Méliès was still relevant in 1920. Just because someone pioneered something, doesn't mean that they did it best or that their work is relevant to later works in any way but lineage.
>>

Shinkai didn't won an oscar.
>>
>>151153990

>he thinks Oscars matter
Miyazaki didn't even appear to pick up his Oscar. Because why should he? Disney pushed for the Oscar, not him. The Academy Awards are just a way for Hollywood to pat themselves on the back and sell more movies. It does nothing for a Japanese director.
>>
>>151153306
Cool hot takes anon, but the fact that they and their movies are discussed today is proof enough of their relevancy.
>>
>>151154341
You mentioning them on a Bhutanian shunga scroll forum, and me refuting your mention doesn't count as discussion.

I like to think Lasseter picked up Miyazaki's oscar and thinks of it as a prize. "I got Miyazaki's Oscar! I am finally on the same level as Miyazaki!" Despite having a dozen of his own Oscars.
>>
>>151153990
He's about to.
>>
>>151149103
Why is he such an old grumpy faggot?
>>
>>151149103
Miyazaki hasn't been much beyond a celebrity for a while, he turned his back to the industry and alienated himself, now only normalfags care about what he says.
>>
>>151157789
Disney has that shit on lockdown now. They'll give Shinkai a pity nomination though.
>>
>>151159767
What did Disney do that was actually good?
>>
>>151160007
that's not the point
>>
I live in a country where many animation schools and studiosare located (France) and I can guarantee you that Miyazaki is idolized and revered by almost everybody here. Every director's dream is to be compared to Ghibli and be acknowleged by Miyazaki/Suzuki/Takahata. They couldn't care less about Disney, Pixar and others, they all look up to Japan and especially Miyazaki.

Compared to all this Shinkai is still a literal who, and a whole career can't be judged by one success. Miyazaki had thirty years of work behind him before people started to take an interest in him outside Japan, while Shinkai will maybe end up as a one-trick pony like many others.
>>
>>151160918
So Shinkai is the french animation of the anime movie director genre?
>>
>>151160918
>Compared to all this Shinkai is still a literal who, and a whole career can't be judged by one success.

Shinkai doesn't have Disney distributing his movies for him and most people haven't even heard of him til now with Your Name.

Satoshi Kon shits all over Miyazaki as a director yet almost no one acknowledges him in the west. It's not about skill and talent, it's about executive marketing exposure and profits. Always has been.
>>
>>151160918
>Frogs
>Being weeaboos
No surprise there.

>Muh animation schools
What traditional animation has France produced of note since the triplets of bellville?
>>
>>151160918
>Every director's dream is to be compared to Ghibli and be acknowleged by Miyazaki/Suzuki/Takahata.

Most directors don't even know Takahata and Suzuki exist.
>>
>>151153306
you know nothing fool
>>
>>151164960
You sure showed him wrong with that compelling argument
>>
Did he unretire after he knew about Your Name?
>>
>>151165356
He did months before it was even in theaters. Shinkai is nothing to him.
>>
>>151166089
>a guy with as much pull as Miyazaki Hayao wouldn't know about a major movie production until it hit the theaters

>a guy with as much pull as Miyazaki Hayao can't even read his own industry's trade papers
Not saying you're wrong about his impression to Shinkai, but...
>>
>>151165071
I don't think a compelling argument is necessary for the guy who a) doesn't understand the point of analogy and b) doesn't think Chaplin or Welles are relevant.

>>151163050
I feel like that's nonsense. The average American filmgoer, sure, but any animator would know those names.
>>
>>151166390
Just because he knows about it doesn't mean he cares. You think he gives a fuck about big Disney movies like Frozen? Some retards think Your Name's success was the reason he came out of retirement.

That's bullshit and you know it.
>>
He'll never be irrelevant, but if he doesn't pull his panties out of his ass he will go down in history as the world's biggest anti-progress, technophobe crybaby.
>>
>>151166724
>but any animator would know those names

Neither Takahata nor Suzuki are animators.
>>
>>151167166
Did I say that? And I'd extend animator to people involved in animated film in general.
