The first episode is good. The smoking episode is memorable for how insane it is. The writer was a hack for only being able to come up with "BUT THERE IS A BIGGER HIDDEN EVIL" for why our "villains" were sympathetic.

There are good examples - like FLCL, Abenobashi. And then theres Zvesda, Rolling Girls, Flip Floppers etc.

The key is either make a story actually deep (FLCL.. well. "deep" as it was not actually random) or actually fun (Abenobashi). However most such shows fail at both.

Recent good example would be Kyousogiga - its both very well written, "deep", and very fun.

Less successful example would be Yatterman of the Night, that had very good start but went to shit. Another would be Punchline and Gatchaman that while beind mediocre is actually a decent eample. And example of failurs one doesnt have to look far as we have one this season with Flip Flappers.

Zvezda had potential, but failed to live up to it in every aspect.

When you see new "original" show app poster with "cool" character design and over the top trailer - chances are, it`ll be shit, because creators try to compensate for lack of substance with "originality" and style.

It's not any particular show but that production budgets have shrunk where almost everything is 1-cour only. Used to be if you had a clever unique concept like a Yuasa or Ikuhara you could get the funding to make Penguindrum and Kaiba in 2-cours. But disc sales are falling apart and there's only money in games and merch that an artbook title won't be able to sell. So you have to cram Yurikuma into a 1-cour disaster or go begging on Kickstarter for funding.

Zvezda could've been great as a 2-cour show that explored the contradictions between what adults want out of society versus what children want and what would happen if a child were to take over. But with the limited budget it could only cover half of it and they couldn't find a compromise on what parts should be left out to make it fit.

Mostly, the ending never resolved the questions raised at the beginning. In particular, how did Kate actually take over the world, or did that really happen and wasn't just a fantasy or metaphor?

It's impossible to get full funding for experimental arthouse shows, so they might as well not bother if they won't be able to get the full point across anyways. Or make an LN based on the script first to see if there's an audience so that there's less risk involved.

Yuasa has never directed a 2 cour show. I've always assumed Ikuhara got that privilege because he was a fucking legend making a glorious return after directing multiple major successes in the 90s. Artsy shows have always been a tough sell, no matter the era. It's pretty rare to see them get 2 cours without any special circumstances.
