I just watched the episode, and I don't understand how you people overreacted that badly.

It's like you forgot Kubo isn't only a fujoshi, she's also a figure skate fan. It's only natural that we got an episode centered on the main event, with lots of skating and pros watching closely each others performances. In this story, skate is as important as love, as both make each skater evolve and redefine his path.

Much more than his immediate reaction of shock after his missed jump, it's what happened after, that is the most important. His calm attitude and the fact that far from being eternally traumatized, he could focus on someone else than himself. More than his flawed program, it is Victor's attitude and behavior watching the other participants that filled his thoughts.
Seeing his fascination and joy in front of such amounts of talent and diversity, he must have thought 'I forgot that he isn't only my coach, he's also a pro skater. Of course he would stop to focus on me when other skaters show him what he lost'

Yuri decided to free Victor so that he can stop being in his shadow. And isn't that natural? After all it's not as a coach that Victor entered his life. It's not 'coach' Victor Yuuri admires and respects. It would be an error to get romantically engaged in their actual situation. They both can't be themselves.

First, free Victor, at any cost, even a gold medal. Then start over again and rediscover each other without that weird 'distance' that exist between a coach and his pupil. They need to be on the same level, and with Yuri's recent evolution as a skater, they might already be.
