Also note that the hologram is EXTREMELY low-tech. It had been around since the 80's in arcades. You project a half circle of images that creates a 3D hologram from 180 degrees of view. That's why it is a cylinder.

The only thing different is the LEDs, which of course is new tech that allow affordability and decent resolution. That and the voice recognition which is almost reliable now.

It's small scale production. From what I determine from their website, there isn't anything actually EXPENSIVE in the hardware. It has a small projector, cameras for facial recognition (proven with stuff like face rig that just used a webcam), and doesn't come with its own computer. The only reason it costs so much is to recoup the software research costs.

If it actually takes off, it would be EASY to massproduce. And China would likely make bootleg versions at a fraction of the cost (and would likely overheat and explode from bad components.)

The developer also studies Project Diva animations to get inspiation for how his waifu would move in the Gearbox.

The voice actress was chosen from 10 candidates, mostly for her clarity of voice. She models all the motions herself and then the 3D department converts it into the character manually.

The developer was very moved when their video release at the start of the year got a huge response. Specifically they realised Japan wasn't the only nation with lonely people. That was why an English version is being made.

They produced their first prototype in Oct of last year. That was what was used in the first trailer and their demonstrations. But the developer said she was only 30% complete. She was responding to sounds only, and it was not emotionally connecting to his satisfaction.

That is why with the latest prototype, he added face recognition. Smile at her and she will smile back. Wave at her and she would wave back.

Part of that is to decrease her errors, so she wouldn't accidentally turn off your TV and such. By making sure she takes non-verbal communication into account, she can more accurately know what the owner wants.

In the end the developer himself finally gave the Okay to start production and commercialisation, when he felt she is now advanced enough for him to want to take her home and live with her.

In particular, he felt that she is truly ready, when he would rather hang out with her at home than to go to work.

Future plans:
More characters, male characters, videogame characters.
Multiple Gearboxes that you place in every room and are linked up, so she wouldn't be restricted to one place. There are also plans for having more than one girl at the same time.

And long term is a wish that gearbox would have physical mobility. But that's far away.
