Hata is pretty much killing off all potential pairings at this point.

Ruka entered the scene way too late. Even though I like Ruka, him ending up with her would be a major mistake in light of the situation they were in.

Indeed, the difference between her and A-tan, was that the latter was introduced in volume 9, and her story with Hayate was really, really good that it put anything the other girls did with him to shame. In that regard, Athena was a game-breaker, since her story was THAT good.

Ruka, not only showed up far too late, but she also appeared after Athena and unlike her, she didn't have any established relationship with Hayate, not to mention she got introduced during a time in which Hata was trying to shift the focus back to Nagi.

Anyhow, a Nagi end can still happen, if we consider this episode as a setback, so that later on Hayate realises he did love Nagi all along (even though no such thing was ever developed throughout the story). It would be a shit end, but it can happen.

I don't see many chances for a Hina end, but a Hina end could help save Hata's career as a mangaka, since he would be handing over the win to the most popular girl.

Which he then proceed to fuck up by procrastinating on that with all the random side-quests that didn't really go anywhere. I don't know the exact circumstances behind the time when he was working on the doujin arc, but re-reading them all at a go after it was all done, the doujin arc actually had a pretty solid foundation. In hindsight, I'd rather he went on a short hiatus to have time to plant things out properly, then tie things up together into one proper arc rather than have a weekly release consisting of 1 focused chapter, followed by 2-3 chapters that aren't quite gag centred and instead feels more like him trying to pad things out.

You've pretty much nailed how I feel about the direction Hata is taking this story.

An A-tan ending could have fit well in the story, but he decided for whatever reason not to go with it. A Nagi end would undo all her character development towards becoming an independent person. A Hina end wouldn't really work since he hasn't given her any role in the story for hundreds of chapters. That pretty much only leaves >>150916353 which works, I suppose, since this manga has never really been about romance (but goddamn would it make me angry).

I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that no matter how this series ends, I'll end up disappointed.

No it wouldn't. Nagi already thinks they're in love and practically dating and that hasn't set her back. Why would it being real do so?

Maria and Hayate's comments about finally letting Nagi go are about taking care of her as caretakers/guardians. It wasn't in the context of any other sort of relationship.

I think that's what people have been expecting to happen for the longest time, I do think a fair amount of us are kind of surprised how seriously Hayate is drinking in the realization in and realizing there is no amicable way everyone is going to get a happy ending, I mean I think if everyone else finds out about the kidnapping I think they'll find some way to forgive him, but not Nagi.

Which is sad because she's the happiest she's ever been lately so this is going to be a literal dagger in her heart.

Beginning of the end.

Nagi will find out that Hayate didn't love her and her pain will be the catalyst and open the gate to the Royal Garden. Hayate will go after her and get her the inheritance. Then he'll leave and go off on his own because he feels bad for what happened.

We'll get a time skip 5 years or whatever (so Nagi is an 18 year old adult). She'll have finally tracked down Hayate, she'll confess to him for real. He'll finally admit he loves her and then Nagi and Hayate will become a couple.

I can't see any other ending.

Why is Sakuya so sexual, and why did she become irrelevant in both harems?
