Timing is perfect with the skating season happening, it's also very very popular in Japan so they would capture a whole lot of non-weebs to check it out. Well with No. 6 and Eva, both romances didn't nessisarily get a good end. Rat left and their relationship was never 'official.' Same with Eva, sure Kaworu said he loved you and Shinji admitted it after the fact too, but they we never a couple either.

I don't know if it's the combination of a lot of things with YOI that have connected with people. It's not just the romance, thougj BaldFat is definitely a breath of fresh air.

He was there only for 1 episode + a couple movie scenes and some crazy people are still discussing if Shinji was bi at all. What's amazing is that I haven't really shipped gay pairings before either. Never been into that shit, but then I saw the Friendenemies ep in Star vs. which made me kinda like Tomco and then a couple of weeks after I saw that ep 10 of YOI happened, which finally piqued my interest enough to watch the show and boom, full on gay shipper. In manga, Kaworu was so aggressive and Shinji didn't show any sign of liking him until after his death.

In EoE, the scene where Shinji lets GNR take hold of him (which is full of sexual imagery) the one Shinji lets is basically Kaworu. Only that scene might be meaningful but it still doesn't compare to Yoi.

Fuck dude, I'm here since the beginning. Lured by the trailer, watched ep 1 two days after it was aired (which means Saturday here) and was fucking blown away.

I don't watch anime. I read manga. I never shadow a show and wait every ep. But here YOI comes, wrecking everything. I'm still a college student, and I have an internship every Thursday. I watch at 4 a.m. and cannot sleep until I go intern and go home at 9 p.m. after work. I've never been thread locked before, yet here I am.

Yet it makes me feel so fucking happy. Like no matter how shitty my students are, no matter how tiring and pointless my internship is, no matter how frustating my uni is, I know something happy waits for me every Thursday.

It's been such a good ride, anon. And I can't bear thinking about it ending. Honestly I've been suicidal this past year and watching YOI made me feel so much happier than I've ever been in years. It deluded me into thinking that life may be somewhat worth it after all.

Viktor really is a miracle of this universe. He's handsome and /fa/ as fuck, but that isn't what makes him so appealing. It's mostly his character. Before episode 10, he looks like a slut, but a fun, well-meaning slut who goes to the wildest parties and enjoys life to the fullest. Like other people have said, I think it's because he's so well-written he feels like a real character. In many animes I've seen, the characters are sort of outlandish or their actions and choices and motivations feel a bit too unrealistic to be believable, but Viktor honestly feels like a real person.

And he's nice and admirable; he's been diligently working hard on his career since age 7, he's got very high work ethics that took him to the top. He's a legend and a five-time everything champion but still polite and friendly, he didn't let it get to his head - there's still a humbleness there, despite the insane success. Also he's not infallible, he makes errors and mistakes and misunderstands people.

He's also tragic; he sacrificed a great deal for his career, and now it's ending, he's getting old, he's very lonely and has a slight crisis over the direction of his life and it all being meaningless and what's he going to do when he can't skate no more when skating has been his whole life.
And then there's also an aspect of great sadness, pain and vulnerability behind his endless patience and smiles, this heart of romance that has him leave everything and follow the crazy perceived romantic gesture from Yuuri - and then cry alone when no-one sees because he doesn't know what the fuck is going on and thinks he gave up on everything to get played, while still smiling and soldiering on like it's nothing in the morning. I mean really; he shows up, pulls his grand "I accept your offer, here I am" gesture in the onsen, gets rejected, is heartbroken - and just accepts that okay I need to prove myself to him and gets to work.

Like he's truly an admirable person. Admirable, handsome, and with actual, real vulnerabilities and faults that make him human and aren't shit made-up flaws like "lol they can't cook everything the touch becomes poison". It's because he's so well-written. Also he just looks so sensual, my god.

I don't think Victor returning to skating is outside the realm of possibility by any stretch of the imagination, but this is definitely a theme they're exploring.

I think it's because of how relatable his big motivation is, the pain and fear of growing old and failing and still being single, lonely (and gay) at the age when your peers are happily getting married and having kids all around you, and it all makes you question your life choices. It's a common, human fear. He also seems to have quite a romantic heart so I'm guessing being so lonely really weighed on him.

Also can't be easy when the field is full of teenaged competitors who are a full decade younger and your own hairline is starting to recede etc, that tends to intensify the feeling of being old and "what the fuck have I done with my life, where did I spend my youth". Also this approaching uselessness and emptiness; he's been the best skater in the world, but only has maybe one more short season of that, and beyond that is total lack of direction and loneliness. It's terrifying.

And still he keeps being so smiling and cheerful and tries to not let it get him down.

It's funny, the more I think about him the more amazing he becomes. Truly a really well written character.
