Madoka started the boom or grim magical girls, but none of those shows are a clone.

Madoka's influence on the late night / otaku focused Magical Girl shows is curious.

On the core aspect, I'd say it did two shifts. First, it leaned said adult-focused shows away from Parody, something Nanoha had already started, but Madoka took it to a less "campy" approach.

Second, it just kinda opened up more slots for shows with MG aesthetic in the otaku scenario. We have seen a rise in all sorts of late night magical girl, not only the dark ones.

Though the later could just be a result from the Precure monopoly.
