I've noticed that in english most of the time it just doesn't matter how vowels are pronounced. I've heard the word "the" being pronounced as "de", "di", "da", "duh", or sometimes just "th" with a silent-ish nonspecific vowel sound at the end. You could probably eliminate most vowel sounds from a sentence and still be perfectly understood.

No, it was nicknamed Citong City, after the Arabs mistook the Paulownia tree for olive trees, called zaitun. 刺桐 is what the locals referenced because cìtóng sounds like the Arabic zaitun. It was a historical misunderstanding from the traders and it stuck ever since.
