When it comes to deciding who I'd rather put last it really comes down to either Kars or Kira, since I basically prefer every other villain over them. There's not really any JoJo main villain or hero that I dislike except Young Joseph, even my least favorites I'm really fond of.

I love the both of them but there are issues with their presentation, and at the end I'm ultimately more fond of Kars as a concept and a villain (even if Kira is an objectively better character).

He was, we all kind of agree on that. In fact one of Kars's problems as a villain was really that, he got overshadowed by one of his minions. More screentime would have fixed a lot of problems people have with him.

But yeah, as a whole, I actually do think Kars is a pretty good character even if he's a great concept executed poorly. I understand why he's generally everyone's least favorite JoJo villain but I'm very fond of him.

i love kars only from his design alone. everything else is cool though.

Since we're talking about I'll just say that I loved it, but I kinda disliked how the minor characters were handled. Aside from the obvious cases like Sandman and Pocoloco having gutted development, minor characters like Wekapipo and Hot Pants had it the worst. Wekapipo got killed off in D4C just to show off the menger sponge abilities while Hot Pants died unceremoniously just when she was starting to get interesting. Johnny and Gyro were great and I liked characters like Diego and Mountain Tim, but I feel as if Part 7's minor cast isn't as good as in most of the previous parts.

I like the little character trait that he loved nature and would go out of his way to protect plants and animals, but then once he ascends the power goes to his head and he kills a squirrel for no reason. Given more screentime, I would really like to see more about that side of him, how he's been with the earth for 100,000 years and watched humans take it over in an extremely short time. It could have made him a lot more relatable as a villain.

Also, it cracks me up that Araki's depiction of the ultimate life, the pinnacle of evolution, looks like the frontman for a glamrock band.

It wasn't just a random trait, it was actually crucial to the point of his character.
Kars is, in essence, a traitor. A backstabber. A character that leads you into thinking he's something but then betrays your expectations. We spend a lot of time in Part 2 establishing the Pillar Men as honorable, respectable figures (even if they are inhuman monsters). ACDC and Wham are treated as such. And at first, it looks like Kars is going to be like that.

Kars is established as a seemingly more amoral figure than Dio who cares only for his goal being achieved, cares deeply for his comrades, and goes out of his way to protect parts of nature that aren't human. He's also more reserved than Dio was, at first. Most of his scenes establish this noble behavior. Especially his reactions to Wham's death.
But then he backstabs Lisa Lisa and shows how much he really doesn't give a shit about honor and rules, and then indulges in Dio-tier levels of sadism. The backstab of Lisa Lisa is meant to make Joseph, and the audience. feel insulted and betrayed.

Later, we get his backstory that reveals that the Pillar Men were respectful to nature (although they didn't care for humans since they were food) and that they tried to kill Kars specifically to prevent him from throwing the natural balance off course. So we see that Kars was, all along, was keeping the tradition alive (the tradition of the tribe that tried to kill him). When he becomes an Ultimate Being, when he is no longer a part of nature but something completely above it, he's above such thing. Hence, he kills the squirrel in a display of power.

That's the point of him respecting nature. It was something to lead you into thinking he abided to honor and principles when, at the end, he couldn't care less about those (and he's kinda right, considering these things got Wham killed). He backstabs even his own supposed principles in his search for power.

Well, yeah, kinda. I mean, Kars sets himself apart from Dio because he doesn't go out of his way to destroy and murder and conquer everything that comes in his way, he actively avoids fighting and everything he does agaisnt the heroes is more or less a response to puny humans trying to stop him in his lifelong quest or murdering his family.
He saves that dog mostly because it's a Pillar Man tradition that he keeps alive, the Pillar Men respected the natural world while feeding on humans and using them as servants, and Kars did that too, killing drunken drivers to save a dog, and purposely complicating a landing he could easily survive to avoid crushing a patch of flowers. It's not that he really cares about the dog's life, it's just that he cares even less about the human life, and he doesn't murder for no reason until he becomes an Ultimate Lifeform.

In fact Kars is shown to be seemingly respectful to other traditions as well, like planning out that entire chariot race and serving as the announcer. Of course, these things eventually get Wham killed, and he's looking for revenge for him and ACDC, so he puts them aside for the sake of victory. I wouldn't qualify him as respectful to traditions, but he certainly respects Roman culture. The Roman ripple users were the Pillar Men's first true opponents, and he must remember them fondly. Hence why he set up that chariot fight.

I'm hoping they handle this week's episode good enough to make it one of the biggest highlights of the whole part. There's so much they could do this week, we've got another throwdown fight similar to the brawl on friday's episode, that whole air bubble hide-and-seek match, Okuyasu's revival and dream, etc.

They really could nail this week's episode if they directed it and focused their budget on it. Though I have to admit, these past few episodes have been infinitely better than DIO's World.

There was a lot of tension at first but it sort of died down into a punching spree.

Bite The Dust felt REALLY tense, they handled BTD honestly so well that even though I knew everything that was going to happen I still felt incredibly tense. It had so many great moments, like Rohan finding Kira's identity only to die, BTD's appearances, Hayato getting the whole gang killed and him falling into that eye. Shit was amazing.

CDIU 1 also had a lot of great tense moments, like the scene with Okuyasu's body.

Was anyone else kind of weirded out by the pacing and handling of some scenes last episode? Like the air bubbles moved so awkwardly slow, the disappearing and reappearing air bubble was weird. There was a long and awkward pause between when The Hand came out and Kira actually moved.

I feel like some things were just handled very awekwardly and they kind of killed the tension for me since I already know what will happen so I'm just here to see the fights recreated properly.

Also they fucked up the rain and Kira was blatantly not 10 metres away.

Diavolo's strength as a character and villain lies in his several mysteries and his selective appearences. Diavolo is sort of like an anti-Kira because, while we get several moments dwelling into specific details of Kira's life, his beliefs, his hobbies and whatnot, Diavolo is kept a mystery to us until the very end. He appears only twice before the finale, and in both of these occasions, a character dies brutally and the group's plans are thrown in disarray. Conservation of detail is a wonderful technique for hyping up the strength of a villain. So with Diavolo, he's a strong villain because of him being a Grim Reaper-figure within the narrative that we are incapable of sympathizing with or even understanding up until the very end.

Pucci is a bit of an opposite: he's a horribly, horribly broken and twisted shell of a man acting on delusion, corrupted by DIO into becoming his legacy. What makes Pucci a strong villain is precisely what makes him weak person: he's a deluded man plagued by the weakness of his past and his personality who seeks to circumvent this weakness by making others weak. It's similar to DIO, who desired to rule the world so no one could be above him, but Pucci doesn't even want to rule the world, he thinks he's saving it by enforcing his rules on everyone. He's a strong character because he has the same kind of determination that Jolyne or Jonathan had, and he's a strong villain because, like Dio, he is a character who just takes the plot and runs with it to hell while everyone struggles to catch-up. His character unfolds as the narrative goes and he shows himself to be more and more like DIO. He's almost like a villanous Joestar who happens to be fighting for DIO.

This is part of what makes the both of them strong, effective villains, even if they are broken, delusional humans who bring their own undoing.

Diavolo is extremely self-destructive, he essentially makes it almost too easy for Giorno to swoop in and take his place.
In his attempts to make his drugs the only drugs on the market, he alienates some of his followers, including Bucciarati... which starts the plot. He attempted to use Gelato and Sorbet as expressions of how he didn't want anyone finding out his identity, which led to La Squadra, a very competent and dangerous assassin team, rebelling two years before the plot happened (keep in mind all they wanted was just a raise). He did a similar thing with Trish and Bruno.
He even expresses clear dislike for his own “personal squad”: Tiziano and Squalo, Carne, Cioccolata and Secco… and he clearly says that he hates the idea of even working for a split second with the last two he hates them so much. The only person he trusts is, by his own admission, Doppio…. whom he abandons without a second thought anyway.
He's extremely delusional and paranoid, like DIO without the charisma and self-assured confidence. His organization is only kept together by employees like Polpo, Pericolo and Bruno, and the fear of The Boss's power.

Now as to how Diavolo relates to the gang and the Requiem ending, besides the parallels to religious imagery like Jesus (Giorno) and Lucifer (Diavolo) that require a different post, you might want to read this to get a better insight into it

I don't entirely discredit that because this series has plenty of problems as far as writing goes, mostly in the first parts. I certainly don't think logical inconsistencies are that much of a problem because they are practically par for the course for a work of fiction, but I do think it's perfectly valid to criticize aspects. It's impossible to consider objectively poor characters like Caesar well-written, or to ignore poor decisions in storytelling like "The rain sounded like Josuke's voice". Araki is not perfect, and I must make this clear: incorporation of themes does not immediately make a work good. If it did, steaming piles of shit like Batman Vs Superman would be considered masterpieces just because Snyder shoves crosses and Jesus symbolism every time he can.

I do, however, think this series deserves more credit than it gets as far as storytelling goes, mostly in regards to characters. I do not think JoJo should be held to conventional narrative standards, let alone what's typical for a shonen manga.

To repeat, I do not think JoJo is perfect, but I do think it's more clever than we often give it credit for.
I think JoJo deserves study, and praise, and criticism, it's a 30 year old series with seldom any hiatuses or breaks that has played with tons of different art styles, character and storytelling archetypes and tones. If this series was just a generic shonen manga, we wouldn't have 24/7 threads to talk about it.

If there's one series where I really want people to go full death of the author on, it's jojo.

And Araki has more sense too. Reading his interviews on Kira, horror movies and even pic related makes me think he probably has far more of a sense than the majority gives him credit for.

The fact he makes an effort to try show western history and eastern history together in his designs are always a joy to read all the little hints he hides in them. We call him a goober but I'd love just to talk to him about history.

Absolutely, the series is so damn creative and it shows from Araki's liking of western things. The fact that Stands are named after music references really makes them so much more memorable and seem much more like something other than a generic shounen power-up.

I actually really admire Araki.
Really bothers me how people shit on him for really lame reasons.
Numerous times he "forgets" stuff is just him dropping something he thinks wouldn't work or bore us, the readers.
Not saying he's flawless or anything like that, but he gets way too much shit, considering he has been constantly evolving and changing over the years, I think Araki deserves more respect.
