Oh I'm watching that right now. On episode 30 and it's another flashback episode. That seems pretty common in this series.

Yeah.

Erin has great plot and (main) characters, but the pacing is slow and fucked up.
They could cut half of the episode and nothing of value would be lost.

I agree. A 26 episode run would have cut a lot of the fat and repeating. The one good thing about the slow pacing is that it's a good anime to watch right before bed which is probably why I haven't finished it by now.

You seem to forget that this was a series literally developed at children and aired at a time for children to watch.

Yeah I get that it's made for a young audience but even then there should be a bit faster pace if you want to catch those young eyeballs. I'm not saying I hate the show. Quite the opposite. I wouldn't have stuck with it for thirty episodes if I didn't like it at least a little but it could be better. I like the attention to detail they gave to the Beast Lords and the Touda. It's intricate on that level. I just think it would have worked better as a 26 episode anime.

That is actually quite dubious.
Considering the whole plot and some of the more graphic scenes.

I agree too. I think it would have worked better if they'd adapted it for an older audience more young to late teen maybe and got rid of those two goofball comic relief characters, got rid of a good deal of the filler and flashbacks, and tightened the whole pace up as a whole.

It did a very good job at developing its world and building a likeable protagonist in Erin. Her growth and maturity as an individual was well maintained as well.

The cultural difference is very apparent in what does get shown to younger audiences in anime. Take One Piece for instance which has dealt with some more gritty concepts. but is prime time kid/teen TV.
