Light at the beginning (who is fundamentally the same as the one who lost his memories) was a good boy, but he has that ability to steel his mind and fully commit his powers to something. He has the intelligence, the confidence and the sense of righteousness. Also the murdering shit tons of people like that will definitely have an effect on you. Light set his mind to become a murderer for the sake of his goals in full belief of his righteousness and so became a terrible person fairly easily.
