It really depends.
If you're Japanese, you would never bring up unusual/uncomfortable topics unless it is absolutely necessary or if they're seriously angry.

With Western foreigners it's different, since Japanese are more likely to open up to them, since they don't follow the same societal rules. They will sometimes even approach complete strangers to talk about these topics, though much like any other Japanese, these type of talks will take place in a specific place and a specific time.


Of course, if you as a gaijin approach them and try to force any difficult topic on them - like you would with some other Westerner, you're likely to get either: a silly answer, no answer at all (the famous poker-face Japanese smile), or get them angry.

I lived in Japan for two years, and I recall how easy you could be approached by Japanese people in certain places: for example, at the lounge of Asakusa Smile (a hostel in Asakusa - Tokyo, that is used mostly by foreigners).
Mind you, they don't approach you and suddenly start bringing up their problems. They start with some simple chat, which usually goes to the differences between Japan and the rest of the world (cultural, societal, etc...) and eventually it goes to their own personal stories.

I remember finding it extremely odd until someone explained it to me (some Japanese man who had lived 10 years in America with his family), along with plenty of Japanese cultural subtleties I hadn't picked up yet.

To be fair, during my time in Japan I met several foreigners (some which were exchange students and others were expats) who said they would rather be in Japan than being in their countries (mainly the US and Australia).

Of course, in their case, they aren't expected by the Japanese to put up with most of their societal norms - though you're expected to abide to some, at some point.

That being said, I met several gaijins over there and in my own country claiming how repressive their own culture was and that they didn't want to go back to their home country.
