The most generic shounen ever but because the happy go lucky protagonist became edgy for one part of one arc it's suddenly a masterpiece now. The chimera ant arc had shock value which brought a lot of viewers and finally made HxH popular enough to be on par with the rest of other shonen. Gon, despite making a sacrifice is healed up one arc later and despite being edgy for one part is now back to his old self. Literally zero character growth.

Leorio isn't fleshed out enough as is the rest of the cast. Nen had potential but then turned out it's just energy blasts/fists/blade/typical anime shit. Stands and devil fruit powers are much more interesting and exciting despite the less complex explanations.

It's full of undeveloped characters, plotholes and asspulls.

Odds are that if any character of even average strength were to have a restriction like "give me more power for the next hour and then I die" they would be on Netero's level. It's a psychological thing.

No one is eager to cripple their long-term potential just to win one fight.
If they actually get backed into a corner so badly they realize cripple nen is the only option, odds are they're already dead or only realized that AFTER getting stabbed in the dick.
At which point they're bleeding to death and panicking too much to make any tangible thoughts about nen restrictions.

Nen is heavily influenced by emotions. If they think they might be screwed before getting to that point and try the trick, odds are it won't work because of their doubts about really going through with it. "Oh shit, this guy might kill me" ain't cutting it beyond a typical adrenaline boost.

It only worked in Gon's case because he spent plenty of time simmering in guilt and hate before hitting full despair, and Pitou had developed enough mercy to not just decapitate him as soon as the phone call came.
When Gon made the decision to throw away everything, it wasn't some simple survival instinct.
He was fully willing to die if it meant reducing Pitou to a stain on the floor in the process.

The reason Gon's powerup was so immense was because of his potential, which was foreshadowed the entire arc (when Gon shows off his strength to glasses dude, or when chameleon dude says he feels a limitless potential). If some average nen user attempted the same shit they'd probably become as powerful as some above-average nen user and still wouldn't come close to someone like Netero.

I thought that only happened when you actually came into contact with malicious aura, like Killua experienced with Illumi and Wing, or what Gon experienced with Hisoka in the hunter exam, or what they both experienced against Pitou. I didn't think just seeing the aura would have the same effect. If Knov came into contact with Pouf's aura, Pouf would've detected it since he was using en, so I always thought his breakdown was caused by just seeing such a terrifying aura, rather than actually touching it.

Kurapika finds out about the succession war and how she and Woble, being in the absolute weakest position, desperately need any advantage they can get just to escape alive. Pika agrees to defend them, in exchange for helping him get to the prince he was really after.
>We finally get on the boat,. It's basically Titantic 2. While Pika is preparing escape plans, he senses an evil aura coming from the baby behind him.

Every time someone threw a punch there was a 10 minute narrative about all the possible consequences or whether it would land or not. It was so annoying. It was still a dumb move on Madhouse's part, it feels much more shoehorned in the anime even though it shouldn't make a difference.

My guess is that it through off the pacing of their episodes, or someone really thought it'd do better at the introduction of that arc.
