Mamoru Oshii's love letter to Tarkovsky's filmography. It's terrific.
>>
>>150717025
Good stuff

hand-drawn animation makes me happy
>>
I love the soundtrack. Yoshihiro Kanno outdid himself. It's almost impossible to find his other compositions, however.
>>
>>150717025
Yoshitaka Amano is a god.
>>
Underwhelming. I think that it had an interesting premise and some of the scenes were quite impressive such as the tanks rolling down the street and the spectral fisherman; but as a whole it was incoherent and ultimately didn't leave much of an impression. Though that being said the I believe the film was never meant to have any form of driving plot in the traditional sense and exists purely as an artistic entity.

あなただれ?
>>
>>150717025
I love it, but if you aren't already familiar with the Christian symbolism, then you might miss a lot of what it was going for and thus find it boring.
>>
>>150717887
This pretty much sums up how I feel about more than half of OVAs from 80-2000.
>>
I didn't get it.
>>
>>150717955
It's a tale of someone's disconnection with his Christian faith. A sad story, but one that's elegantly told.
>>
>>150717025
I thought it was pretty good for what it was.

Absolutely gorgeous animation/design wise, and as for the story, even if you don't understand the religious connotation, the base story is still compelling and tragic, even considering how simple it is.
>>
>>150717887
Maybe the film is just an experimental showcase or something like that. I don't mean that it can't be profound for somebody because of that, though.
>>
>>150717887
>incoherent
what about it was incoherent? Pretty much everything followed the same theme, being "questioning blind faith." The fishermen chasing the illusion of something (fish also are symbolic for jesus in christianity), the girl's desire to keep the egg in-tact even though she doesn't know what's inside of it (and the man breaking it to figure it out), for some examples.
>>
>>150718013
Are you sure the story was even there?
>>
>>150717025
I liked it very much
>>
>>150718227
Based Oshii preferred to keep quiet and let the viewers decide themselves.
>>
>>150718710
Yep. Angel's Egg doesn't focus on a story, but how the atmosphere affects the emotions of the characters.
>>
>>150717025
Utter garbage
>>
>>150717025
It's an unparalleled masterpiece, but an utterly personal one. It'll never find a general audience, and that's fine. You don't have to like or understand it.

That said, anybody with a decent education in one of several fields (comparative religion/theology, intercultural studies, lit theory [me], psychology, or a few other overlapping disciplines) should be able to work out what Oshii's saying about the way the Christian obsession with Truth threatens the Eastern attitude towards Enlightenment. I find the movie uniquely, chillingly beautiful.

>>150717887
Nice reading. I'd suggest that, although fish are indeed associated with Christ, the concept Oshii's playing with is evangelists as the "fishers of men": the men of stone, hardened by their faith, are unable to "catch" the ethereal Eastern souls that don't inhabit their realm of absolutes, and their clumsy brute force attempts merely bring about great cultural devastation.

Top tier faithflick up there along with Love Exposure, Calvary, Leviathan and Stalker.

It's got this unique atmosphere, this sort of abandoned, gigantic gothic world which is like a dim weeping which is only a remnant of something, which is now empty of something. Shadow of the Colossus has similar tone to its locations. Its silence really serves its effect, it really works unlike in many artistic flicks. The scene with the angel fossil put the Fear of God in me.
>>
>>150719552
What was the girl doing during the shadow fish scene? I forgot. It's been too long since I've watched.
>>
>>150717025
>I'm a pure innocent little girl and jesus let me down
This is what Angel's Egg is actually about. It's sanctimonious drivel.

>>150717025
One of my favorite anime, just one of the most entertaining media pieces I've seen in general.

>Love Exposure
Shit
>Calvary
Literally Catholic Apologetic
>Leviathan
Politically motivated hatchet job (aka I can't get rid of Putin so I'll slander the church instead)
>Stalker
Not about religion, but rather misanthropy.

Pic related is the only great cinematic treatise on Christianity. It understands what the fedora tipping literal communist lacks is historical context. When viewed in light of the times the Orthodox Church in Russia begins to make sense to even the most dogmatically secular individual.
>>
I didn't like it that much the first time I saw it, but every rewatch since then has made me appreciate it more.

The soundtrack is fantastic.

>Politically motivated hatchet job (aka I can't get rid of Putin so I'll slander the church instead)
Nah, you're being narrowminded. The political stuff is only a device.

>Not about religion, but rather misanthropy.
Explain further.
>>
>>150721687
>explain further
Fear of what's in the heart's of men. That's what Stalker is about. That's misanthropy or at the very least Hobbesian. That no one can be trusted (or even trust given to themselves) to make a wish in the room.

>That no one can be trusted (or even trust given to themselves) to make a wish in the room.
Yeah, but then what about the zone? The problem the zone presents hasn't to do with self-trust but rather the incapability to follow a higher design.

>That's misanthropy or at the very least Hobbesian.
Hobbes wasn't born on another planet. The idea that evil is inherent to Man is much older than him. He was just expressing a common Judeo-Chistian idea in biopolitic terms. It's also not necessarily misanthropic to admit people are prone to err. To think they can only err would be misanthropy. But if that were the case in Stalker, then where does that leave the Professor in his attempt to destroy the room?
>>
>>150721917
>It's also not necessarily misanthropic to admit people are prone to err.
This is a misrepresentation. The point of the room is that people at their very cores aren't worthy of trust. Not that they tend to mess up, that they fundamentally at their deepest darkest level in the pit of their souls are not worthy of it and no amount of good intentions on top of it can sway that fundamental fact.

None of them want to turn lose what's in their hearts because they know deep down what's in them. That's misanthropic, and it isn't really a religious piece.
>>
It looks nice, some scenes look great, but director outright stated it makes no sense and that you need to fanwank it into having a semblance of one. In other words, it's shit.
>>
>>150721917
If we're going to say men cannot be trusted, in relation to what are we saying this? What is there that can be trusted? What's the great institution men are unfaithful to in their heart of hearts and who does it belong to, if it's not their own?

And you still haven't answered my point on the zone. The zone doesn't have anything to do with what is in their hearts. It's not about their desires. The Stalker also treats it with absolute respect and worship.

>it isn't really a religious piece.
I think you believe my post was referring to Christianity in specific when that wasn't the case. I meant faith and religiosity in the broader sense, not of a particular tradition.

I recently watched this and the only thing it had going for it was the visuals and atmosphere. However it lingers on things for way too long to the point that it felt like they were just wasting my time. I recommend watching it on double speed if you do.
