It often is. There's clear ups & downs in the series. The beginning is kinda slow and meh, but it really pics up the pace and style at second season.

That being said, Gintama ain't just a gag-anime. It actually has its very own plot, and plenty of "serious" arcs, that can be damn awesome and/or heartbreaking at best.

Watch the first few episodes (aside from the first two, which were filler made for pre-existing manga fans rather than an actual intro), if you can't get into the show much, skip to episode 25, which has a very different humor style from the initial episodes and is more representative of what you get later in the show.

You could also try the first two episode of the 2nd Gintama anime, which showcase the parody focused humor side of the series.

Inaccessible humor that teen weebs pretend to understand.

Gintama is about the investment.

Hit or miss. Sometimes it's hilarious parodies and absurd situations, other times it's snot, farts and Shinpachi screaming at everyone.

I think so.

I'll keep it simple. It's a hipster gag series. Whatever you expect; it gets crashed and ragged on. It deviates from expectation and stereotypes and tries to be progressive. That's basically it.

You really cannot apply the old and busted "3ep rule" to Gintama. Even more so since eps 1 & 2 are literal filler, that you should skip.

Yes, although I think lately it's lost a bit of it's humor. The Gorilla needs to stick to lighthearted comedy and stop fucking up his manga with edgy grimdark drama.

THe only girls that are always on there are kagura, otae, sarutobi, kyubei and tsukuyo. Everyone else rarely or never shows up. Those are literally the only girls on that series.

It takes about 20 episodes before you start "getting" it, there's a lot of culture-specific and character-specific jokes.

I started watching the show just couple months ago for the first time, and while I do love it to bits now, I do admit that had I had to watch the first season at weekly pace when it aired, I prolly wouldn't had kept watching it too long.

Going back to the first season now, it seems like a totally different show, with familiar faces.
