Gao Gai Gar has one of the best combining robot sequences ever, but the show would have been better without Mamoru and the kids.

The only shitty thing about original GGG was the blue/white train. I thought it was weird how Gao Gai Gar was a Lion themed robot with a fucking train. The color scheme didn't really match.

Gao Figh Gar on the other hand is great because it's all mech themed, plus it's nice not having too much colors on the robot.

The lore was pretty damn good they managed to link so much of it together.

The design team fell into the trap of making action figures rather than bionicles. The later models lacked the complexity and mechanical side of the earlier ones so didn't sell as well leading to the axing.

The reboot then repeated the exact same mistake so failed miserably.

Bohrok were probably my favourite villains. When I found out that matoran turn into Bohrok when they die it blew me away.

There is no short explanation.
So it turns out that all human life on the planet in the game was seeded 10,000 years ago by a biological planet-killer weapon that crashed the ship it was being transported on. The life was seeded to be a mechanism of self-repair, with implanted behavior to steer them in the right direction and eventually reach sufficient number and biological complexity to suffice as replacement parts. A council was also created with slightly more inside knowledge and theoretically infinite lifespans to oversee it. All life, that is, except for two people. One survivor of the crashed ship, which the player character is a reincarnation of, and a woman, the result of that man encountering a power generator that accidentally dragged down a 10+ dimensional being to our level of reality. It just wants to get home and out of the generator thing. To do this, it gave you throughout the ages its power and the woman, who is also reincarnated and was based on the man's desires at that specific moment, its will. She is also the key to reactivating the biological weapon as she is basically its link to the power. Also, the power source is responsible for the energy that the 'magic' used and the giant robots feed on. And the major religion in the game is secretly run by Gebler, the sky (NOT space) nazis that were themselves founded as a front for the council that the ancient weapon established.

And that's not even the half of it.

It's not even a finished game. It's clear it was meant to be at least three discs, with only the first finished. Disc 2 is mainly a slideshow and unfinished dungeons since it's a story that you simply can't condense and that was the most elegant solution after Square cut all funding and told them to sell what they had.
And for reference, this is a game that open with you as a 19 year old artist painting in his village.

It's also worth noting that at various points before production, this game was the original pitch for Final Fantasy 7 and pictured as being up to 6 or 7 entries in a franchise rather than a single title. As it is, they still planned on sequels and expanded universe type stuff. The failed Xenosaga series of games was an attempt to recycle some other ideas from what would've been the 'earlier' entries, and the Xenoblade games are mostly unrelated beyond the devs.

Because Square was going under, Xenogears fell short of the million units shifted needed to confirm a sequel and all those involved left the company and the IP to work on spiritual successors. But that's not entirely true cause the complex kits from the early run didn't sell so good to begin with. Which is why they phased them out. It is true though that they relied way too much on simplified, cookie-cutter designs later on.

And the reboot brought back more involved designs specifically to return to the basics, it fixed the friction-less gear gimmicks and still failed. Mostly cause there was next to no marketing and practically no one besides the hardcore fans even knew the line came back.

And there was also the issue of the lore. The original was too deep for the kids because it had no unified media format they could easily follow (like an ongoing cartoon). And the new lore not only repeated the same mistake, it was hampered by being dumbed down, so even if kids somehow knew of it, there was nothing to get them attached.

I like Xenosaga, the story is less complex but a lot more clean. Unlike Xenogears the fact that it was axed to 3 episodes rather than the 7 originally planned actually turned episode 3 in one of the RPG I've ever playes since a lot of awesome stuff happens in there.

That's because Xenogears is mainly the work of Soraya Saga and her husband. Once their funds were cut leading them to release an unfinished product, they decided to leave the company and ended up working for Namco instead.

So from one side they can't release another Xenogears title because that's copyrighted by Squaresoft (now Square Enix), from the other side Square Enix knows that it would be pointless for them to release another Xenogears game as the key writers of the story are no longer working for them.

I honestly think the Evas are the most impressing mechs. They're these tall, skinny, hunched over figures that looks and fight like an elite soldier, and then they hit you with the fact that they're actually giant monsters with armor. The way they look and move is close enough yet not quite close enough to human, they really give off an almost uncanny valley vibe. And then there's the god-tier audio design, from the entry plug hum to the roars. It may not be the prettiest, or coolest, but the Evangelions are fucking terrifying when you watch it for the first time. I was more scared of them then I was of the angels.
