The Y tip is just an easier way to draw the sword. Most animators don't have the time to put lots of details into each and every frame.

i'm pretty sure its just a common mistake that was started with some famous anime, like Trunk's Sword, they ended up putting the katanas design into the Europeans swords, the Habaki on many European Swords in Anime is an example.
in fact the design like shirou's Sword in Op image is far easy do drawn, just a straight Line from guard to the tip and its done.
