Anime writing is a complete fucking joke meant to fill time between whatever the production committee is looking to plug and a complete afterthought in the modern industry anyway. Writers like Mari Okada, Ichiro Okouchi, Hiroyuki Yoshino and the like are coveted not for their talent in writing, but ability to crank shit out fast and work on a lot of projects with a quick turnover and without making too many if any demands. Just give them their paychecks and have them write enough shit to fill 12 episodes. Doesn't matter if any of it fits together, goes anywhere or even makes much sense as the goal is literally just to write enough material to theoretically keep people watching for 3 months.

Its not very interesting. The characters aren't presented in a way that really grips me, and the direction is nothing to really get excited about either. The interaction between Cocona and Papika should be developed, focused on and really interesting as its the biggest part of the show, but it fell really flat in that department in my opinion. The rest of the show kind of falls apart due to that.
Spooky episode was oddly fantastic though. That was a legitimate 10/10 episode.

For what it's worth, I don't like either.

They have slightly different problems though. PW sucks because it's a bland harem series with completely arbitrary rules that give you no tangible sense of consequence, and FF does share that lack of consequence, insofar as in both shows the plot armour always saves the day no matter what. However, PW is not even trying to be anything original, which makes it stale. FF is trying to be FLCL (or so I was tricked into believing), so it's a letdown by comparison.

I don't agree with that at all. When a niche genre gets an instant classic it shouldn't be judged any less great just because of its niche appeal. Flying Witch is one of the most pure iyashikei anime since Aria. It deserves massive praise, but obviously there will be people who just don't find it appealing because they don't like iyashikei.
