Well, side characters get more protagonism later on and the plots gets moving as the villains get introduced, but their dead mother and limbs are a recurrent theme through the series.
I would recommend to watch it at least until 19, if you don't like the series by then you should drop it.

Well thats kinda their backstory.
If you aren't enjoying it, that probably wont change

Also, this is an unpopular opinion, but I prefer the less faithful original adaptation.
