I could never make it more than a couple episodes into Heavy Object because the fanservice is just so awkward. I normally don't care at all, but it was so cringy. I also couldn't make it more than a few chapters into the manga for the same reason, so I thought it may have been improved in the anime, since more meddling and whatnot, but nope. Same painful execution.

Fanservice can be done well, but when it's the same shitty onsen/beach/whatever episode you've seen hundreds of times, the same overused generic fetish outfits, when they spend so much time on the fanservice that the rest of the show suffers from it, then it's not adding anything. Plus oftentimes the fanservice itself just sucks, doesn't go far enough.

sometimes shows based around fan service (e.g. to to love ru, keijo) might suck and it's easy to blame the fan service, but it's actually just the story that sucks. or maybe the art or audio sucks.
