Whether Yayaka is just really concerned for her friend, or has romantic feelings doesn't matter in the long run. The fact is that she was willing to fight and die for her, and whether it's a selfless sacrifice, anger over losing the only thing that ever even slightly mattered to her, or a longing for Cocona as a lover doesn't much matter.

Any art, once shown to an audience, belongs to the audience as much as it does to the author. I don't mean that the audience gets to dictate what the artist does, or that they owe them anything. What I mean is that now their story, your experience of that story, is inside you. That belongs to you. And inside of that, all that matters are your own feelings about it, maybe even your own baseless assumptions. The author gave you the framework, but the rest of it is yours.

That's what makes any kind of creative endeavor compelling, at least to me. Good artists know how to give your imagination plenty of room to expand the story in ways they may have never thought of, to bring bits of yourself into it. Some even make their entire work with the intention that a huge portion of your experience of it is within your own imagination-- maybe even most of it.

Bad artists just spell out absolutely everything, and don't allow any room for ambiguity.

At least, it shouldn't become a problem when someone wants to break continuity and reshape a setting or a characters history in order to tell their own story.

I also think the more elegant way to do exposition on the main backstory would be by using the setting and DPI, and an advantage of not having explained exactly how that works is they don't necessarily have to copy exactly the same method as in ep6.

A simple-ass flashback like the one at the end of 7 or the one in 9, but longer to show the backstory, wouldn't be "bad" but it would be disappointing as storytelling.
