Alright so this is a really vague question but here goes.

I'd like to try scanlating something. My Japanese isn't at a professional level or anything, so I'd prefer to pick something that nobody picked up before, so I don't have to worry about expectations to live up to.
Problem is I don't really get exposed to manga outside of /a/, and everything popular on here is translated anyway.
So how should I even go about finding a suitable manga to pick up? Basically - how or where do I discover untranslated manga?

The ones I really like the most are the adventurous ones with a very prominent solemn, melancholic or blissful atmosphere. Like Aria, YKK, Emanon, Blame, more recently Made in Abyss (RIP translations), stuff like that.

The ones I read the most though (there's just a lot more of them around) are your standard shitty romcoms.

I'm open for most things, just not much of a fan of shounen, sports, yuri or anything to do with NTR.

They took over a year to do the last Kenshin oneshot if I recall correctly. I'm sure Viz will do it at some point though, maybe during the next few weeks so they'll have something to put out when Jump is on break.

Watashi no Kairos AKA My Kairos is planet-hopping story about an orphan girl turned intergalactic gladiator after getting sentenced to death for biting off the ear of her (basically) slave master. She encounters a cute little boy she decides to name Kairos who's a genius inventor and they start a sci fi adventure together. By the way, she loses a foot in chapter 1 and gets a new robotic one. That's always cool.

If you're a Touhou fag, you might recognize the author Karaagetarou (Kara'agetarou, Karaage Tarou, Karaageya, Karaage's Shop) as someone who makes a lot of adorable and well-written, full-color, storybook-like Non-H doujins. Check out At Chirei, it's particularly good. This is, to my knowledge, his first original work.

Only gripe is that it's smaller than I'd like. If anyone can suggest a larger scanner that doesn't produce scanlines that isn't also $1000, I'm all ears.

I use a Canon LiDE 110, it's really cheap and is more than big enough for magazine pages or anything else you'd need. Don't get an autofeed scanner, they'll give you scanlines and often bend the pages slightly.

Unless you're scanning an absolutely insane amount of volumes, you'll get the best results with a cheap flatbed, just tape some black paper to the inside to stop bleedthrough and put something on top of the scanner while using it to make sure the pages are pressed down flat.

In my experience, Epson flatbeds produce scanlines. I don't remember if I tested the Lide. Id have to compare dimension, because the advertised area is smaller than the actual scan area.

I've never had any scanlines on my Canon. The dimensions shouldn't be an issue, I got it specifically because it was portable but still big enough to scan my magazines so I doubt you'd need anything bigger.
