First season is actually reasonably good. A bit of wish-fullfillment in parts, but that's common enough in anime. As far as I can tell, SAO's big failing was becoming too popular with people /a/ doesn't like.

After that, the writing starts developing problems, including a lack of tension and development, but that's not surprising once the initial Death Game premise is resolved.

ALO was abysmal though, even by SAO standards. No tension, incest shit and worst of all, no purpose whatsoever.

GGO started off much better it somewhat managed to become even worse somewhere along the way, and don't even get me started on the Kiritowank shitfest that those Excaliburnittothefuckingground episodes were. By the time you reached Mother's Rosario the show was already way beyond saving. Mother's Rosario itself wa alright though, not great but definitely the best part of the series as a whole.

Oh and SAO Abridged is miles better than Aincrad, if only because it treats the characters like actual people, instead of satellites for Kirito to have revolving around him.
