No, the official translation are vastly more reliable than any of the fan translations in general. The official translator for Kodansha's been the translator for the entire series. He'd been translating for years before that, and he lives in Japan. If there's anything he has trouble figuring out how a native speaker of Japanese would interpret something, he can just ask his wife. The fan translations differ wildly in quality depending on the translator. Mangastream alone has been through half a dozen different translators while they've worked on the series. Even when they have a good translator, as a group they suffer from a desire to rewrite things they don't think sound cool enough which leads to shit like "peerless sword" being replaced with "performs miraculous feats". The worst the official translator has to contend with is being contractually obliged to use the names he's given, and a corporate structure that makes it take months to get a clarification or correction through to Mashima.

Why the fuck do people say stuff like this? People sense magic in the series all the fucking time. Just look back to Natsu pissing himself as Gildarts reveals the full extent of his magic power and other people on the island noticing it. Or Natsu and Gray being surprised by how much magic power Brandish has when all she'd done thus far was walk up. Or Mavis wondering what was up with Larcade's magic when he was standing around doing nothing. Or Jura and Erza feeling something odd about Wendy's magic when she'd only introduced herself thus far. Those are just a few examples off the top of my head.

The Crunchyroll manga translations for Fairy Tail are essentially the same as the Kodansha volume translations. It's the same translator. The main difference is that the volume release has more time to fix errors, get a name correction approved, and make changes based on what's revealed in subsequent chapters. The translator also gets to put as many translation notes as his publisher will let him at the end of each volume. I've noticed differences in translation choices, but I don't recall seeing any noteworthy errors, or them flat out adding their own stuff because they think it sounds better.
