Jessica is absolutely in denial and even admits to it.

Remember in Episode 8, where Jessica is talking about the time the servants convinced her to go into Beatrice's room and someone was in there? She realized that she could either believe that there was a witch in the room, or believe that one of the servants had been hiding in there for hours in the dark just to fuck with her.

In the end, she decided she would rather believe that the witch was real that believe that someone she knew and cared about would lie and trick her like that just to scare her.

It's pretty clear from that exchange that she probably suspected there was something odd about Shannon and/or Kanon, but she would rather just trust them than suspect that her best friend and the person she's in love with could be lying to her about everything.

So Jessica's not really retarded or naive, she's just someone who decide to pick the Magic ending because she realized what picking the Trick ending would do to her relationships with the people she cared about, and she valued those relationships more than the truth.

Each season is the length of an average arc. 4 seasons. So it's basically one half of Higurashi or Umineko.

It's pretty hit and miss I think. If you like Ryukishi you'll probably like RGD. It's got lots of conspiracy and (criminal)political maneuvering. It gets very preachy sometimes with Ryukishi's own political thinking. Maybe this is common in Japan, but it sounded very strange to me. Rose basically sounds like a national socialist, but in a very self-depreciating manner. ie "we Japanese are a childish people, so we must work together, put up a common front against stronger smarter foreigners or we're doomed". If anything, I'd say the real problem with RGD is how flat most of the characters are. So much character development happens completely off-screen, particularly for any of the Primera 7 who aren't Rose or Leo. It's disappointing because characters are generally Ryu07's strong suit.

Those are the kind of things I'm talking about, though. We're thrown into Stella's change of heart after most of her growth happens off-screen. Meryl is an entirely flat character until the end of episode 3 where we get a huge exposition dump about all the complexities of her relationships with Rose and Stella, but we never actually saw any of that in their character interactions. Suddenly saying "yeah so this character totally had a problem" isn't the same as character development.

So first off, after the Rokenjima incident people started writing fanfiction stories about what happened. And Tohya started writing stories that became very popular because they felt extremely authentic and these people began showing up in the stories that he wrote.

The people who read Tohya's stories were divided into two groups. The first was the goats, who just read the stories without actually trying to solve them or hunt for a deeper meaning. These people only really cared about the "Who done it" part of the mystery and didn't really care about how the the criminal carried out the murders of why - they were fine with "mystery device x" and "tiny bombs" if it allowed them to declare someone to be the criminal. They're the people who read a mystery story and don't really try to solve it on their own or think about it. They just read the story, find out who did it and then put the story away.

Erika was the personification of those who took it a step further, searching for the "Who" and "How" to determining the culprit. While Tohya was trying to get people to understand the "why" Erika (and the readers Erika represented) didn't give a shit about that - they were more interested in dismantling and solving the stories Tohya was providing them and didn't care about the deeper truth that he was hiding in it. Basically Erika wanted to know who the culprit was and how they did it, but she didn't care about the "why." These are the readers who sit down with a mystery and approach it from the perspective of a mathematical problem, looking for clues and trying to "win."

Ange was originally like Erika - she wanted to find out what happened, a but over time she began to be more interested in the heart of the story than in trying to actually solve the problem of what happened - the "why." Finally at the end, Ange has to decide between which she cares about more - the "Who and How" (Trick) or the "Who and Why" (Magic).

Stella's development was totally shown though. In the beggining you see lots of scenes of her whoring out, generally complaining about problems without suggesting ways to fix them. The change of heart is connected to her relation with Rose. When Rose collapses it starts making her think about what she can do as a friend to lessen the burden. The scenes with Keith and Yuuji lead her closer to Rose's ideals. When she does announce she's joining the criminal side of Primavera there's a scene where she sits in on a meeting. That scene was excellent in showing how out of her depth she was, yet she still wanted to help Rose.

There was lots of good character exposing scenes for Stella.

Chapter 1 was written by Yasu. So of course she assumed that Battler had forgotten about her. But in the chapters written by Tohya (who had Battler's memories) Battler mentions how he still remembers his first love but she had moved on.

So it's clear he hadn't forgotten her at all - he just assumed that after so long and after she had grown so close to George she wasn't interested in him.

Ahh Gabe's a great guy. I kind of enjoyed seeing his success as a Ryukishi villain.
I'll tell you now so you don't get disappointed like I was. The final season is excellent, could even be the best season depending on your view. Except as soon as you get to the final part of the finale, the "graveyard scene" everything gets really rushed. There is a proper ending, but it leaves a lot for speculation and everything wraps up way too quickly.

I think what made Gabriel the most effective is the fact that death is permanent in RGD. While all the deaths in Higurashi and Umineko were horrible, the effect does die out a bit when you know you'll be seeing the characters again in the next episode.
