Assuming the harem end is 4 girls, that's already 4 people he'll have to support there. Assuming each one has a single kid then that's 8 people that the MC has to provide for. He'd have to have a house that can support 8 people and any additional children they might have.

Remember, this is Japan. Unless the MC is rich and has a guaranteed trust fund, he's probably going to end up being a salaryman working 90 hours a week to earn 40k a year. 40k a year isn't going to support 8 people and himself. Working all those hours means he won't be able to properly spend loving and quality time with all his waifus.

Most of them will eventually start hating and cursing this life style and decide they can't do it anymore, leaving him to find someone that focuses and devotes themself to just her instead of 3 other whores.

It's happy at first but I imagine most harem relationships fail a few years after they get out of high school.

What if MC was a billionaire?

Several girls like one guy. The best outcome for each is to get into a monogamous relationship with said guy. But each girl realizes that if they demand a monogamist relationship, their chance of getting picked is 1 divided by the total amount of girls. If they don't get picked, there's no relationship at all, which we assume is the worst possible outcome. This is an important assumption, since some girls are fine with just finding some other guy if they lose, but usually we're talking about 2D girls who are so pure that they'd die virgins if they didn't get their one true love fulfilled. So depending on risk aversion and how preferable monogamy is to polygamy and how preferable polygamy is to nothing, there's reason for each girl to individually decide that a polygamist relationship is fine.

When each girl has made this realization, it's simple: They'll each want to convince each other to settle for polygamy, since every rival who demands monogamy decreases the chance of the guy picking the harem. And if we assume that the guy prefers a harem over just one girl, then demanding monogamy becomes more risky with every girl who joins the harem, so there might be a bit of a domino effect.
