I have to say that was some of the worst battle animation I've seen yet from the Strike/Brave Witches series. They reused the same seen 4 times and there were far too many close ups and Neruoi showers to even know what the hell was going on. This series should have never left JC Staff's hands. Silver Link isn't doing this series justice.

BW feels like a properly lived-in world, with real things happening even when the camera isn't around. Hangars actually have stuff in them, there are actual base personnel doing things. You can believe there's more to their world than a handful of lewd girls and a boring monster of the week. There are actual characters, development, and a sort of "actually giving a fuck" coming through that wasn't there in SW.

I'd take BW's cutelewds and character fanservice over SW's absolutely emotionless, rote pantyshots and tits. Even Keijo has better fanservice than SW.

We're doing a literal episode-by-episode comparison, watching SW then BW. Back to back.

And SW has serious issues. Half the episodes in Ep 1 have no/shitty story, and is topheavy with fanservice. Worldbuilding in it is lackluster, and what you do see is empty as fuck. The last half of the season is fairly decent, about about where it should have been overall at minimum.

SW Season 2 fucked all of that over very intentionally, and proceeded to not just ape season 1, it did so poorly. Which is a shame, because it at least had more interesting/original ideas for "plot".

Can't comment on the movie, haven't seen it yet.

The OVAs on the other hand were great, and only got better as they went on. Much more indicative of what SW could have been.

And BW is continuing that.

The plot has it's moments yes, but it feels as if something is missing in the formula of Brave Witches that made Strike Witches so fun to watch. Maybe it is the missing fanservice.

You must have been watching a different show from me. SW1 was super inconsistent, unable to even remember things like how two episodes ago, Yoshika was swimming fine in strikers. But now she's struggling in a shitty beach episode? Yoshika was pretty bad, and the "fleshing" of characters was literally just the bare minimum of Archetype X or Y, and used solely to advance more fanservice. The one exception is Sanya's episode, which was genuinely good, and some of the stuff in the last four or five episodes.

As for them working together as a team, I know for a fact you were watching something else. SW's action scenes are just strings of individual combat mixed with each other. Character 1 swoops in. Fires a gun while their character model remains a still frame. Raises a shield to deflect lasers. Switch to Character 2. Repeat. Switch to Character 3 exclaiming surprise or danger. Then switch to another character doing the same thing. Continue until either Yoshika, the current episode's fanservice vehicle, or the next episode's fanservice vehicle kills it out of nowhere.

Brave Witches on the other hand is doing a wonderful job. A main character who isn't competent, with whom we can learn about the world. She's stuck in her sister's shadow, and is constantly trying to improve herself. The 502nd are initially hostile as a whole, but gradually open up as they see her resolve. As she learns, we learn. And you actually get to see the 502nd as more than the typical paper cutouts you got in SW, because they're not simply there to provide pantyshots. There's actual interaction and development.

You get actual team tactics in battles, too. Just look at the episode with the storm neuroi. They worked together to survive the night, then executed combat maneuvers that actually require more than one body. And though the core idea of witch combat can't be changed up too much from "throw up shield, grit teeth at deflected lasers, fire gun", they manage to make it interesting.

Brave Witches is also just extremely poorly paced and even after gutting out all the fan service, they still manage to waste so much time that they don't further flush out the characters. A perfect example of how wasteful Brave Witches is, was the situation between Georgette and Hikari where the former avoided the latter for several episodes and when the big moment arrived as to why it was happening, it was only because she felt guilty over not being able to fully heal Takami. Believe or not, but the fan service played a major role in why the Strike Witches have a much more tight nit feel than Brave Witches because one of the most intimate things you can do with someone else is bathe with them. Lots of bathing scenes means you're going to see more and better interactions among the group. This scene is a perfect example of taking the resources at hand and making something good out of it. With how Silver Link is working, you'd never see this sort of interaction without Hikari being injected as a third wheel.

Hikari is a better character than Yoshika, but the rest of the group feels so textbook and you learn nothing about them or their characters outside of over the top characteristics.

With how Silver Link is working, you'd never see this sort of interaction without Hikari being injected as a third wheel.

Literally nothing they did in the bathscenes in SW required them to be in a bath. Those scenes weren't even intimate. They were just dinner table conversation taking place in the middle of a bathtub because they desperately needed to sell DVDs.

This episode has a lot of lovely little things I'm sure everyone will appreciate, but I can't get over how bad the battle scenes are. Even if you don't like the pantsu in your face, at least the scenes in S1 and S2 were a lot more dynamic, well animated, and full of motion. Even if stuff like the explosive arrows is 'original', pretty much all of the scenes have amounted to just hovering in front of the enemy and shooting at them.

Bru I remember SW and the combat sequences were none too dynamic. There were brief moments - the episode where they were fighting the neuroi that split into a ton of drone cubes was okay - but even then there were a few brief distance/wide angle shots showing all the witches and neuroi maneuvering, and that was it. For the most part it was stuff like Lynnete riding Yoshika piggy-back so she could make her shot; pretty static, not a lot of animation to do.

It's cool to see that Krupi's grenade launcher is confirmed canon now. Between all the inconsistency where it would disappear mid-scene I had thought maybe they had scrapped it but kept it in the CG model. Another really bad world building episode okay there were people Petrozavodsk, but Murmansk was a ghost town
I predict we got foreshadowing of the Schwerer Gustav or some other massive railway gun as the trump card the Allies are going to use against the Hive. But I wonder how the Neuroi that was sucking up the wreckage of destroyed units and got the Strike Unit is going to change things. Are they going to have learning computer Neuroi that takes the data from destroyed Neuroi so the new units create counter measures against the witches just like how the one hive absorbed Mio to use her as a conduit to create a shield? At least that's good, because the battle for this episode was basically Brave Witches in a nutshell, tried to be flashy and important but ends up being nothing but a giant and terribly animated clusterfuck.

God, the Krupi and Edy night talk scene felt so rushed. Just one more minute more to it would've set the scene better with the mood.
The battle this time was probably the longest, yet absolutely horrendous. Most glaring thing is when the neuroi splits and doesn't have any sound effects to it. Half of the battle is flashing lights where you can't see shit what's going on and the rest are closeups upon closeups to hide lazy animation.
There were so many great moments for good scenes but the execution kills it all, geh.
Tank witches cameo was nice and Krupi is fun to watch. She's like Eila but on steroids.

Are you sure you don't just have a case of nostalgia? In my mind the main problem SW had concerning its characters was that they never appeared to be a group. It was more like a bunch of pairings who had their individual episode, but almost none of them ever interacted with each other outside of that. Erica is with Trude, Eila is with Sanya, Shirley is with Lucchini and so on. And because there were so many characters, none of them got proper characterisation until we had two seasons, a movie and OVAs.

On the other hand, Brave Witches is still in its first season and it's actually building the squad up as a tight knit group. A second season of this and they'll have done more for characterisation than the entire SW franchise so far.

Isn't one of the things we've been talking about regarding Hikari that at least she doesn't steal the spotlight 100% of the time? Still a bit too much in my opinion, but it's a lot better now and the other witches don't just feel like background characters for the most part. Perhaps the big difference is that there's a lot of focus on Nipa and Naoe, which is somewhat bad for the rest of the squad. However, it does mean that for once we have some witches getting proper screentime.

Past the character introduction episodes, the rest of 502nd save for Nipa and Naoe feel exactly like background characters. Krupi had barely any lines till up to this episode and after this she won't have much either again, most likely. Same applies for Sasha, Edy, Sadako, Jose and above all Rall.
Nipa and Naoe are pretty much the Lynne and Mio to Hikari, which is why they're getting so much focus around her. Not that I mind that much since Nipa is the best.

It was probably a separate unit that was on salvage duty.

As for why the allied forces didn't salvage Krupinski's unit. It was an escort duty mission so the ships didn't have the ability to go dredging along with the fact it was in now hostile territory with precious cargo where it was already attacked gave it zero reason to stick around. The one thing to note is the Salvage Neuroi was sucking up the wreckage of the other Neurois and also picked up the Striker Unit. Which in this case means the Striker Units use similar material to the Neuroi because it was able to filter out the water and all other matter. I could see the final boss for Brave Witches isn't going to be a Neuroi Witch as we knew it persay, but their version of the Warlock where they reverse engineer their enemy's tech. The fact they showed the Warlock does hint that. Also it kills any chance of another 501st cameo (Unless it's at the very end where they do something absurd like have Hikari meet Yoshika.) since it was probably Hartmann and the other Karsland 501st witches that smuggled the information to the 502nd.

The real issue is there is no real 'main character' persay since you have Kanno and Nipa also taking a portion of the spotlight away for Hikara, who as i stated in previous threads is there to help the viewer establish relationships with the rest of the 502nd. Having others there further muddles the flow of things. It's like if they injected Lyne and Perrine into every episode.

On the salvage/recovery Neuroi; I went back and looked at the scene and it seems to simply be the Neuroi we saw today regenerating while also picking up the striker unit. The ramifications this has for the plot besides Allied tech now being in Neuroi hands (?) is that what Rall said about being able to exhaust the hive isn't true if downed Neuroi can keep coming back to the fight.

I think BW is overall a little bit better, but honestly they're not really that different anyway. It feels like a few people keep bringing this up every single time, "SW did this better" and other nonsense, and keep turning the threads into arguments about which has shittier battle scenes. I'd really rather just enjoy the series and talk about it, but this is what we have.
