One of the themes of this episode was awkward body sizes/uncomfortable spaces.

When people hit puberty, the growth spurt results in sudden and uneven changes to their dimensions. Teens find themselves feeling unfamiliar in familiar spaces, uncomfortable in previously comfortable positions, and feeling like they suddenly don't know the shape of their own bodies anymore. One of the significant ways in which this is manifested is the development of secondary sexual characteristics, particularly in women where the growth of their hips and butt can be awkward, particularly with regards to sitting positions they were accustomed to before puberty.

The "cockpits" of their mecha were essentially just the Thomasson in Flip Flap HQ that they use to enter PI, but shrunk down to the point where they couldn't fit into it comfortably. A familiar space suddenly made unfamiliar by the uncertain dimensions of their growing bodies.

You can consider this another facet of Cocona's confrontation with change from episode 6&7. She's now facing unavopidable change in the world around her that manifests in the way she fits into the environment, in the way she locates herself in the space around her and in how she finds her place in what was once familiar but now is changed. The emphasis on her body's dimensions, particularly her exaggerated butt and her size relative to the space around her, were physical representations of Cocona's conflicted feelings regarding the changes happening in her life (eg. iroha) and how she coped with them.

Cocona was embarrassed by the entire situation: being stuck in a bathing suit, fitting herself into small space and being forced to recognize the size of her butt, the obviously phallic joysticks, all of it. She was blushing awkwardly left and right.

Papika, on the other hand, was oblivious entirely to that context and totally without shame. While Cocona is becoming increasingly aware of her transition into adulthood (lets leave sexuality and body development behind for a moment and think of this in terms of coming-of-age), Papika hasn't even gained a spark of awareness yet. In fact, it almost seems like, with respect to adulthood, Papika is being left behind. She's static and unchanging while Cocona and the world around her constantly change.

Earlier in the season, we discussed the possibility of Papika representing the beginning of Cocona's transition into adulthood, being a sort of physical manifestation of change. With more context now that we're 8 episodes in, it see,s like the opposite is true: Papika is a representation of Cocona's inner child, and childish fear of change, desire to remain unchanged, un-adult and free.

In episode 3, which had a great deal of symbolism representing bondage and physical confinement, Cocona's aggression towards Papika, her desire to harm her friend while under the influence of the mask, can be understood in terms of Cocona's tendency to repress her inner child and the drives it represents. In a sense, she's caught at a crossroads between childhood and adulthood, repressing her childish desires due to various elements of her psychology the narrative has been exploring, but also clinging to it, indulging it privately and avariciously because she's terrified of the change, the adulthood that might tear it from her at any moment. It's important that Papika only entered Cocona's life when she was introduced to a decision regarding her future -change, responsibility, adulthood: that decision was everything she fears.

If Papika is a representation of Cocona's lost, repressed inner child breaking free, being indulged in this moment fear and uncertainty in Cocona's life, then there is only one outcome.

Yes, that's right

Be ready for it.

The only outcome which can show Cocona's growth in overcoming her fear of growing up, is for Papika to disappear. A literal loss figuratively representative of Cocona's willingness to let go of her childishness, stop clinging to the past and face the future. Papika is Cocona's security blanket, and the ending will show her weened off of it.

Papika will die.
