I don't have a policy against weeb wording; rather, I used to like it when I watched subs. If anything, my problem is that after a while watching anime raw, I have lost track of how much Japanese it's normal for the average /a/non to know, so probably I'm more conservative in my use of loanwords and weeabooese than I need to be.

I did in fact consider a more literal approach to the yamato nadeshiko part, and rejected the idea on those grounds. Feel free to switch to a weebier style if you think you can get away with it.

I think it works, yes. Oh god yes it was awkward, but sometimes I just have to slap an asterisk on it and move on, or else it'd take me weeks to translate one episode.

Minaha doesn't explicitly say who isn't good enough, but in her second line, addressed at Tama, she does say "you too", so I chose to interpret her first line as applying to both of them (thus "we"). That's just my opinion, but I think it's best not to make her sound like she's only criticising Tama.

As for the bit about Iino's advice, it ties in to a previous part where she notices a mistake in Tama's sketch, the explains that she has some second-hand knowledge from her imouto. It's something like this:

Basically, the way "before" is used forces the sentence to be past tense in order to keep the correct order of events. One event (the rainy season arriving) happens prior to the other event (Shii knowing that the rainy season has arrived), but making them present tense would place them as occurring at the same time, which is contradictory. So by making them past tense we can make it make sense by having the second event taking place more recently in the past than the first.

An easier to understand example of why this is incorrect might be: "It is raining before I know it."

That's why the original was changed. As it is now the problem is that it's mixing tenses with "knew" and "had."

Which would be like saying: "It was raining before I know it."

It is strange that it's different than the rest of the sentences, but I'll chalk that up to differences in the way the two languages handle tenses.

And a poor translation on a show like this doesn't really matter, since it's just a cute girl show and the girls are cute even if the subtitles aren't conveying what they're actually saying sometimes.

Compare that to dozens of other things that have zero translation at all.

I don't want to discourage the anons translating this and I commend them for actually giving this a good translation instead of it forever having a bad one, but it would be nice to see their translating magic used on things that actually need it after this is done airing.

It's as you say, of course. It's not like one day we woke up and decided to fansub something, anything, and picked this at random. Rather, this is a need that the SnM fanbase felt and that the SnM fanbase itself addressed.

But let's suppose it weren't the case. Let's suppose we were potential fansubbers looking for a project, because it raises an important question. How exactly are we to find the projects most in need?

You can use fansubdb, nyaa and other sources to find out what hasn't been subbed lately. That doesn't tell you what only has shitty subs available, or what shows have OVAs that weren't simulcasted and therefore weren't subbed.

Aside from that, there's the issue of finding the people you need to work with - not a lot of people have the Japanese, English and Aegisub skills needed to produce a quality release on their own. I suppose you could drop by some groups' IRC channels to ask for available manpower. /a/ works to some degree, but it's hard to assemble people to work on an anime if the lack of subs is killing discussion of that anime in the first place.

So, since we care so much about funnelling the available skills into the projects that need them, what are we doing about that? Is there a fansub wishlist somewhere? I've seen people ask for recruits in scanlation threads, is there some equivalent for fansubbing?
