Fine is like Tintin, a very bland good guy hero that needs to advance the plot (if we throw out the implied yuribait). The crucial difference is that Tintin is always paired with very imperfect stupid and/or unhinged characters which add a the spice the story needs and provide contrast, while the Elystadt cast is bland princess, bland witch, bland keikaku doori man nad a PM so bland we don't even know his name.
The only characters that kind of stand out are Bianca (only recently though), the Atlantan slut and the old guard chief of staff, but they don't have enough interactions to really work.

I've rewatched episode 1 and it wasn't as depressive experience as I initially thought. The first signs of shit writing were all there, but we were too surprised how wonderful the first episode was directed. Also, the first scene with Izetta (flashback excluded) when she was avoiding plane debris why flying towards Fine was much more detailed and dynamic than fight between two witches (I hope they're saving true fireworks for their final showdown).

On the side note, the entire series was spoiled in episode 1 by this guy.

If you're referring to your picture related, I wouldn't say it's much of a stretch that the Germanians were able to spy their way into Fine's plans at all. Especially since they apparently already knew something about her whereabouts when they were searching the train at the beginning of the episode, and ESPECIALLY if Redford really is working for the Germanians, as some suspected last ep.

There's a conflict of ideals between Sophie and Izetta. Sophie thinks humans aren't worth protecting because they will betray you the moment you're not useful anymore. Meanwhile Izetta has decided she will protect them anyway. They'd throw that conflict and the themes attached to it out of the window if it's revealed the White Witch was evil or crazy all along.
