At least when I wast starting, I found that I picked up stitches at the start of rows. On the subject of that, the only thing I can really say is pay attention to those spots, and try to make sure you're knitting through the right loop, and have just the correct loop on the needle afterward.
If all else fails, you can decrease your stitches pretty easily, albeit crudely by knitting through two stitches at once (slide both of them onto the needle at once, wrap around once, and then pull it back through both of them). There are nicer looking ways, but I'm shit at explaining it.

The way I see it, they would not have listed the extra stuff if they didn't want to get anything related to them. I usually try go along with their request if an anon puts extra emphasis on something, but if it is a series I have not seen before and I think I could be better on one of the secondary picks I see no problem with doing that. I'm actually a bit disappointed I didn't get anyone gutsy enough to list Pokemon. I wanted some motivation to put in the effort to make some chicken hats.
