Any other EU/UK/AU peeps see it over the past few days?

Fantastic film, and easily Makoto Shinkai's best work, even if it trod much the same ground as some of his earlier stuff. On which note, the ending nearly made me rage (until the thing happened); though I was kinda disappointed in the lack of an epilogue, because the story didn't reward the viewer so much for all the buildup and I mistakenly thought someone on here mentioning a post-credit scene.

Either way, watching anime on the big screen made for a cool experience, and it really showcased the amazing detail of CoMix Wave's art.

glad to hear it made bank in the UK, hope they bring it back for some more screenings, I had friends that wanted to go but didn't make it. It deserves more than just a one-night showing imo.
>>

Don't get yout hope up on epilogue when watching Shinkai's film.

My local odeon is showing it everyday for a week now I presume because the showing at the picture house cinema sold out entirely.

My cinema was only showing the dub, but the voices really weren't too bad, and i absolutely loved the film.

Did it?
That's pretty cool.

My Ausfag theater was only about 1/5th full, but I went to a midday showing, live in the least-populated capital, and it's running the whole week up to 30th.

I rarely say this without spec of irony or jest, but it's 100% Masterpiece.

It was like combination of early Satoshi Kon and Makoto Shinkai strongest strenghts. A goddamn Gurren-Lagann of anime industry.
>>
10/10. Would drink again.

Anyone else think it felt like watching a 5 or 6 episode tv animu series instead of a theatrical production?

Was it originally written to be a TV?
>>
>>150203938
Okay, I thought you might have meant the scene where it was drank; which itself was pretty amazingly animated.

Can't wait for the BDs. Gonna need 2 hands for this one.
>>
>>150203224
I saw it in Stockholm at one of the only two showings the entire Nordic region had. It was a great movie, but me and my friends had really shitty seats so I had to look up in the ceiling for most of the show which ruined a lot of the eye candy for me. I'll have to watch it again to really know what I think of it.
>>
>>150204040
I understood the Japanese and the subs were way above average. They even handled the gender-bending honorifics joke scene quite well.

Not sure how this makes me feel. I guess I just actually have good taste?
>>
>>150204514
Really they laughed at everything. Every single boob touching scene was followed by bouts of laughter -- it really wasn't that funny.
>>
>>150204514
>>150204580
Can confirm.
I think people laughed more at the fact that they 'got' the joke rather than it actually funny.
>>
>>150204580
Yeah they laughed like madmen there too. That was kind of funny though and a much easier joke to understand. I'm just surprised anyone at all other than the few nips in the audience laughed at the gender honorfics because I honestly don't think the subs did a great job of explaining it and I doubt everyone in the audience understood watashi/watakushi/boku/ore and what makes them different from the other.

Oh well, it's all good though. It'd be worse if they didn't laugh at all.

Also, everyone started clapping their hands when the movie was over.

Were you in Stockholm too?
>>
>>150204551
Nah, I loved this movie but it wasn't that great objectively speaking. Just learn to embrace your shit taste, dumb frogposter.

Yes, people in my cinema clapped as well. I spoke to some other people and it was the same. I'm not sure why though.

I love how there's often two waves on popular media- one for when it comes out, another for when the pirated release comes out.
>>
>>150205554
Well, you're not wrong.
Not even a full 5 minutes into the film and Japan couldn't resist a teenage girl panty shot and groping jokes. Not that I'm complaining or anything.
>>
>>150205706
Meh, the groping jokes were alright, after all, everyone has at some point been asked what they would do if they somehow woke up as the opposite gender one day.
>>
>>150205190
It'll be the first legit criticism this film gets. Its like everyone watched a completely different film or couldn't look past the pwetty visuals to see how generic and barebones the plot was.
>>
>>150205852
If you ask me, there was too much plot. Body swapping, alright. The time gap, alright. The meteor, starting to get a bit crowded. Magic Shinto tree in an ancient crater with magic spit sake and metaphors about braided cords representing the threads of time? Come on Shinkai. All this, along with the three or so insert song segments, made the movie feel almost tiring to watch. It's impressive that the movie was pretty enjoyable nonetheless, though.

Plot was actually the only thing that's better. Mixture of supernatural and time traveling stuff are a nice touch. That being said, I kinda get why the Japanese love it though. The movie caters to a wide range of audience compared to 5cm/s or Garden of Words.

>>
>>150212417
Is that the entire point of fiction? Escaping from the grey and boring world you live in? What else do people create entire universes for? The issue here isnt that one accepts that fictional universes are more interesting than the one we live in (which it itself is only partially true as well since if we were to live in said fictional universe we'd probably think the same about the one we live in right now) but how we handle the fact that they are. Some people just accept it and move on in life, other start to question their own existence and ask what the point in living in their universe is when there could be one/hundreds out there that are more interesting?

I think that this is an especially big problem in anime because not only do a lot of them play in our world, do to them being drawings they are also way more relateable. I at least have a very hard time self inserting myself into the role of a real life actor compared to self insert into an anime protag.

>>150212541

Be that as it may, yes Europe has a fertility problem, but that isnt a problem that couldnt be solved differently. Why do you think westerners have so few children? Its almost exclusively related to financials, part time jobs and a lot of things that have to do with the average worker not being in a position to properly plan his future anymore. Your father could start working for a company in his 20s and it would have been very likely for him to retire as an employee of the very same firm. Thats highly unlikely today. The government could get rid of a lot of the problems by simply encouraging parenthood through financial benefits.

>Horrible pacing
Disagree. Certain stuff could have benefitted from being cut down or lengthened, but overall it was mostly okay.
>The development of the two main characters were clearly rushed
Somewhat, yeah. Them falling in love in particular was a pretty awkward jump - particularly for Taki, who went from lusting after his senpai to crushing on Mitsuha in the span of like fifteen seconds.
>Too many insert songs that took away meaningful screen time
Completely agreed. The "op" sequence was entirely useless filler that spoiled their adult designs, the montage of their crossover hijinks would have been better without the track and by being longer, and Taki's weird mindfuck bit as he was viewing time turning back really should have just been the unravelling sequence and a jump cut. All three felt like they were designed just to drive OST sales.
>Noticeable drop in visual quality compared to Shinkai's previous work (most likely because of longer duration)
Disagree. The backgrounds were still gorgeous and the animation quality was as good as his best or better, and besides the cgi cars the crowds/background characters looked just as good as ever. Only Garden of Words had more attractive character designs as well imo.

I'll gladly take some kinda crappy looking cars and an artstyle for characters I like marginally less than one of his previous works if it means everything else being just as good or better.
>>
>>150203224
>I was kinda disappointed in the lack of an epilogue, because the story didn't reward the viewer so much for all the buildup and I mistakenly thought someone on here mentioning a post-credit scene.

Shinkai only enjoys making people unhappy. He's probably pissed that he couldn't justify them just walking past eachother one more time.

>I believe there was meant to be another fuck you ending that got changed at the last minute.
I doubt it since Shinkai had already done that before.
>>
>>150218789
Oh, yeah, that bit sucked as well. It really should have just ended with her calling out to him on the bridge or something if Shinkai wanted a happy ending.

Making them seperate there just to repeat the "will they speak out or not" scene again three minutes later was blatant and very cheap emotional manipulation.

This kino was ok. Not great or even good.

The visuals were a strict 10/10. Everyone who saw this film in theaters was rewarded. I especially thought the scene where mitsuha is killed by the comet was incredible. One of the most visually appealing scenes in any anime I've watched.

The themes of the story were very enjoyable. I loved how the story the grandma told about the village losing their history in the fire, but still practicing tradition despite not know what it meant. This tied in nicely with the fact that the two MCs "remembered" each other despite losing all memory of each other.

However...

Your Name suffered an extremely unfortunate oversight by the producers. There simply weren't enough of the body switch scenes. They knew that this theme was one of the reasons why people went to see this film. That's why they put so much of the film's bodyswapping scenes in the trailer. They knew it would put people in seats. But sadly there just wasn't much in the film outside of what we saw in the trailer. This mistake will make this film utterly forgettable and detracts from the charm the movie wanted to have.
>>
>who are you
>whats your name
>dramatic scene of her giving him the ribbon
>is being pushed out of the train
>for some reason he isnt following/trying to find her again
>for some reason he just accepts the fact that shes gone
>for some reason she just left town and went home being sad
That part didnt make any sense to be honest. Has she just left the thing with him ok, but the way it turned out there is no way in hell that either would just return to their normal lives.
>>

I don't get this no singles policy and never knew about it. I went alone and I was able to book online.

How do they even enforce this policy? Is it something to do with seating arrangements?
>>
>>150219163
You forgot they montaged through 90% of body swapping scenes with shitty poprock playing loudly over the top.

Visuals I can't award a 10/10. Don't get me wrong they were good, but the cinematography wasn't quite there. I could almost feel each shot coming, and the way they recycled shots, which I know is a staple of animated films really cheapened the experience. Instead of capturing emotion I was merely shown an imitation and expected to create my own emotion.

Shinkai has much to learn but I still look forward to his next projects.
>>
>>150219272
the theater is probably just trying to get people to buy more tickets online. besides, this forces a lot of people to grab a friend and get them to see a movie they otherwise wouldn't have. makes sense from a business perspective.
>>
>>150219332
>>150219272
Singles won't select seats right next to other people, so you end up with half filled rows with every second seat filled. This is why cinemas try to discourage singles.

Also because all cinema shooters a singles, this is more a rumor though.

Well, my criticism of the body swap scenes in the trailer ties into what you said about the music. The most enjoyable body swap scenes were what we saw in the trailer. And they had pop music in the trailer during these scenes because they knew it would draw peoples attention and get them to see the movie. This really is a significant failure of this movie and guarantees everyone will stop talking about it relatively soon. To see critics compare Your Name to Spirited Away is laughable and shows how many fucking normalfag shits are movie critics.

I don't fault them on reusing shots however. This is to be expected, especially in a movie where reoccurring time is a theme, and you're seeing multiple landscapes from two different perspectives.

>>150219503
I believe you are correct in your assertion that this will be a forgettable movie. Montages and pop/rock music really age a movie and relegate it to this early 2000s time period making what would have been a film just another teenage flick like the countless other forgotten ones.

I'm not sure if it was shinkai's vision to include these things, and the overabundant boob jokes, but it's a lesser version than what could have been.

The story made no goddamn sense. I mean, visuals and the OST were great, but the story has so many blatant holes and lacks in so many fields that I dont get how anyone can praise this film. Was it enjoyable if all you did was "watch"? Sure. But if you actually thought about it? Not at all.

-second&first part are completely disconnected
-the lovers meeting at the top of the hill shortly before the meteor crashing into the town felt horribly misplaced because they meet and are instantly ripped apart
-when the hell did the two even fall in love with each other? did all this character development happen offscreen? it sure as hell didnt happen onscreen
-why the hell does Taki ask for Mitsuhas name on the train, but doesnt follow her the second this over-dramatized scene of her handing him the braided shit happens? he just stays on the train even though clearly being curious? she left a fucking train, she didnt fall into a blackhole. and she just goes back to her village, cutting off her hair in depression even though Taki showing interest?
-why the hell does Taki not instantly remember who Mitsuha is the second she tells him her name after the first swap if in his timeline he had that fucking train incident happen which sure as hell should have stuck with him? after all it was so over-dramatized that this isnt something one does simply forget becuase it was a couple years back. the scene clearly was shown to be important and dramatic and it was later shown that he knew that it happened.
-if Taki remembers the high school in the village, then why the hell didnt he just google the name of it to find out were it was located?

cont.
>>
cont.

-why the fuck doesnt Mitsuha just tell all this shit to her father/grandmother? there is no way in hell that grandma/mother didnt experience stuff comparable to it which would make her story way more believable. hell her fucking father even implied that when Taki is in Mistuhas body that he knows that he isnt her. the fuck does he still not believe the story if his dead wife sure as hell told him about these "dreams" family members have/had? this shouldnt even be hard to sell considering how virtually every goddamn person in the village noticed how differently she behaved from time to time.
-Taki KNOWS that the twillight shit is going to be over and the two of them will lose each other (stop being able to see each other) yet even though suggesting to write down each others names himself to make it easier to find one another (he even points out that this is because THEY WILL FORGET THEIR FUCKING NAMES OTHERWISE) he decides to tell her that she loves her instead and doesnt write his fucking name
-AND WHY THE FUCK IS THE ENDING DRAGGED OUT BY 5 FUCKING YEARS OF THEM WALKING PAST EACH OTHER MULTIPLE TIMES? this might not be related to the plot but holy shit its so fucking annoying and bland. there could at least have been some proper closure, not just end it like that after showing all this "LUL I BARELY MISSED YOU LELELE" for 10 minutes on end.

alltheanime's showin it in cinemas in december/january anon, though I don't know if it'll be as widespread as Your Name is.

Watched it in edinburgh during the SLA festival, consider it better than Your Name. 10/10 feels too

You can still do that as an adult, you know. In fact, you can go further a field and do more. You just have to be organised and actually be wise with your money. It's like how my friends just go out drinking every weekend, spending £80+/night on booze and taxis. 10 weeks and that's £800. 20 weeks and It's £1600. That partfunds a holiday across the world for a few weeks.

And that's far better than the bubble you'd have had as a high school kid.

Can't fault the lack of responsibilities thing though. Can't do much about that.

Just give me a screening in London because I'm not sure I'm weeb enough to take the train to Edinburgh just for that one movie
>>
Where can I find Koe no Katachi showings? I want to become a national hunter of all anime kino
>>
>>150226270
Chances are

London
Edinburgh

They're your best chances. Outside of that, probably nowhere.
>>
>>150226331
There was already a showing in Bristol, but I missed it. A one off.

I can get to London if I have time to prepare.
>>
>>150226393
>A one off
Kinda blows with this type of thing.

I wanted to go rewatch Umimachi Diary after catching it when I was living in Japan last year, I was looking for a BD release date over here when I found out there was a screening by a local indie cinema, a week before for a single screening.

Needless to say, I was pissed at the timing, but bought the BD anyway

It's time travel and magic. It ain't gotta explain shit.
Just shut up and enjoy the ride.

where can i get a shrine maid that spits
>>
What's a good way to keep tabs on this kind of shit happening in the UK? I managed to go see this because there are a lot of showings over a reasonable period of time but I always miss one off stuff and limited showings.
>>
God i fucking love this 'Sparkle' track, cant stop listening to it lads
>>
>>150228930
Which one?

>>150228821
Only thing you can really do is follow social media associated with your local cinemas and independents, or just general news about anything that piques your interest. Finding out about limited showings is a skill in itself sometimes, unfortunately.
>>
>>150229060
The movie version that plays when taki cant remember her name on the mountain and she runs to get her dad to evac everyone. Young Taki is also watching the comet go over.
>>
>>150210160
we're practically chinese at this point mate
>>
>>150227491
Thats why I said that the movie is enjoyable if you just watch it. But some scenes, that arent even related to the magic/scifi aspect of time traveling and body swapping simply didnt make a lot of sense. Like that train scene for example.
>>
>>150229276
>Young Taki
He hardly even fucking changes. Lame ass design. The best track of the OST is by far Kuchikamishu Trip. I tearing up every time I listen to and dont even get why. Its not like that part of the movie was particularly tragic or anything. Its just the track itself that kicks in really hard at ~50 seconds in.
>>
>>150230772
Feels pretty bad knowing I couldn't put half of the songs in the OST to a particular moment in the movie, apart from insert songs, because that's fucking obvious to anybody

I'll hhave to give it a proper listen if I get to watch it again.
>>
The feels hit pretty hard when Mitsuha looked at what Taki had written in her hand and it said "I love you". I'm a sucker for soppy romance shit like this.
>>
>>150231740
The spoiler function exists for a reason.
>>
>>150226393
I got to see that showing luckily.

I think Koe no Katachi was better than Kimi no wa na, even though it deviated from the source a bit.
>>
>>150206608
>I didn't expect an OP in a movie. Thats rare even for Chinese Cartoons.
The first part of the movie felt like Shinkai was subverting/playing to anime tropes. Examples would be the bodyswap and subsequent boob groping/EHHHHH and cut scene and then the 'OP' playing. I went in not knowing what the movie would be about but the first 15 minutes or so certainly would have fooled me if you told me it was a generic anime series from this season rather than a movie. The whole first part was meant to make the audience expect a generic rom-com body swapping anime.

>>150219033
They literally had 'boku' 'watashiwa' etc as the subtitles for my screening. People still laughed so I'm assuming there were a few weebs in the crowd.

My biggest gripe about my screening (Melbourne, one of the inner suburbs) was that they showed subtitles for the Radwimps insert songs so they were interspliced with the dialogue which was confusing at times.

The whole thing felt like a drawn out Radwimps music video but fuck it, the movie was great.
>>
Where are people getting the OST / insert songs?
>>
>>150233024
You use google and it takes up to 5 seconds to get a link.
>>
>>150233085

Kimi no na wa ost, first link 170ish mb
Kimi no na wa ost FLAC, first link all FLAC files in a google drive folder

Actually I might have been wrong. Mistuba no Theme kicks in pretty hard as well at the end because thats actually the running towards the mountain scene, remembering that Mitsuha came to Tokyo. The song picks up pretty hard at the end, although I really dislike the abrupt ending.
>>
>going out to see anime movies in public
I will never understand how people do this.
>>
>>150206718
That's not the craziest thing; an old local fansub actually gathered 1.000 facebook likes to petition the distributor. AND THE MAD MAN DELIVERED
>>
>>150234925
Why not? That shouldn't be a problem since it became normies' thing.
>>
>>150234925
What are people going to do about it?

I went to see Yugioh DSoD in theaters and having the audience gasp, laugh, and cheer really enhances the experience. Especially when the audience is perfectly still and holding their breath in anticipation of breathtaking scenes.

For y'all that went to see it, how many of you had people clapping at the end? My entire cinema erupted in applause, not sure if filled to the brim with weebs or it just really struck a chord. It was basically a full-house too.

Perhaps it's the contrarian in me but I don't see the hype. What. Just cuz it has a happy ending and looks pretty means it's so good? 5 cms was a much better experience. Catharsis is better than ass pool happy

5cm Per Second was a sappy piece of trash. It looked great, but it consisted solely on shoving melodrama down your throat. Your Name at least let the narrative play out naturely. It was definitely better than anything Shinkai had made before --not perfect, sure.
>>
>>150243481
Even the director himself didn't know what happened. Maybe it just happened to shot straight at the demand of mainstream.
>>
Just came back from the cinemas and I loved it
The whole thing was an emotional rollercoaster up until the very end and I'm so fucking glad we got a happy ending or else I think I would have killed myself

Really had us right up to the final scene
>>
>>150243729
The story telling and narrative were much better than Your Name. 5 cms was separated into different acts with themes, which enhanced the story telling a lot.

Music was pretty cool in Your Name though ~
