Somewhat, yeah. Them falling in love in particular was a pretty awkward jump - particularly for Taki, who went from lusting after his senpai to crushing on Mitsuha in the span of like fifteen seconds.

Completely agreed. The "op" sequence was entirely useless filler that spoiled their adult designs, the montage of their crossover hijinks would have been better without the track and by being longer, and Taki's weird mindfuck bit as he was viewing time turning back really should have just been the unravelling sequence and a jump cut. All three felt like they were designed just to drive OST sales.

This kino was ok. Not great or even good.

The visuals were a strict 10/10. Everyone who saw this film in theaters was rewarded. I especially thought the scene where mitsuha is killed by the comet was incredible. One of the most visually appealing scenes in any anime I've watched.

The themes of the story were very enjoyable. I loved how the story the grandma told about the village losing their history in the fire, but still practicing tradition despite not know what it meant. This tied in nicely with the fact that the two MCs "remembered" each other despite losing all memory of each other.

However...

Your Name suffered an extremely unfortunate oversight by the producers. There simply weren't enough of the body switch scenes. They knew that this theme was one of the reasons why people went to see this film. That's why they put so much of the film's bodyswapping scenes in the trailer. They knew it would put people in seats. But sadly there just wasn't much in the film outside of what we saw in the trailer. This mistake will make this film utterly forgettable and detracts from the charm the movie wanted to have.

Visuals I can't award a 10/10. Don't get me wrong they were good, but the cinematography wasn't quite there. I could almost feel each shot coming, and the way they recycled shots, which I know is a staple of animated films really cheapened the experience. Instead of capturing emotion I was merely shown an imitation and expected to create my own emotion.

Shinkai has much to learn but I still look forward to his next projects.

Well, my criticism of the body swap scenes in the trailer ties into what you said about the music. The most enjoyable body swap scenes were what we saw in the trailer. And they had pop music in the trailer during these scenes because they knew it would draw peoples attention and get them to see the movie. This really is a significant failure of this movie and guarantees everyone will stop talking about it relatively soon. To see critics compare Your Name to Spirited Away is laughable and shows how many fucking normalfag shits are movie critics.

I don't fault them on reusing shots however. This is to be expected, especially in a movie where reoccurring time is a theme, and you're seeing multiple landscapes from two different perspectives.

The story made no goddamn sense. I mean, visuals and the OST were great, but the story has so many blatant holes and lacks in so many fields that I dont get how anyone can praise this film. Was it enjoyable if all you did was "watch"? Sure. But if you actually thought about it? Not at all.

-second&first part are completely disconnected
-the lovers meeting at the top of the hill shortly before the meteor crashing into the town felt horribly misplaced because they meet and are instantly ripped apart
-when the hell did the two even fall in love with each other? did all this character development happen offscreen? it sure as hell didnt happen onscreen
-why the hell does Taki ask for Mitsuhas name on the train, but doesnt follow her the second this over-dramatized scene of her handing him the braided shit happens? he just stays on the train even though clearly being curious? she left a fucking train, she didnt fall into a blackhole. and she just goes back to her village, cutting off her hair in depression even though Taki showing interest?
-why the hell does Taki not instantly remember who Mitsuha is the second she tells him her name after the first swap if in his timeline he had that fucking train incident happen which sure as hell should have stuck with him? after all it was so over-dramatized that this isnt something one does simply forget becuase it was a couple years back. the scene clearly was shown to be important and dramatic and it was later shown that he knew that it happened.

The first part of the movie felt like Shinkai was subverting/playing to anime tropes. Examples would be the bodyswap and subsequent boob groping/EHHHHH and cut scene and then the 'OP' playing. I went in not knowing what the movie would be about but the first 15 minutes or so certainly would have fooled me if you told me it was a generic anime series from this season rather than a movie. The whole first part was meant to make the audience expect a generic rom-com body swapping anime.

My biggest gripe about my screening (Melbourne, one of the inner suburbs) was that they showed subtitles for the Radwimps insert songs so they were interspliced with the dialogue which was confusing at times.

The whole thing felt like a drawn out Radwimps music video but fuck it, the movie was great.

Actually I might have been wrong. Mistuba no Theme kicks in pretty hard as well at the end because thats actually the running towards the mountain scene, remembering that Mitsuha came to Tokyo. The song picks up pretty hard at the end, although I really dislike the abrupt ending.

I went to see Yugioh DSoD in theaters and having the audience gasp, laugh, and cheer really enhances the experience. Especially when the audience is perfectly still and holding their breath in anticipation of breathtaking scenes.
