Here, Shark is just some dude who got sent to bad boy school taking the rap for his dickhead friend and Kaito's as boring as his Arc-V counterpart, Faker's dead, Haruto's off screen nearly half the time, he's like Mokuba if he isn't and he barely talks to Shark or Yuma, it's like he's here out of obligation or something, just like Crow, the twins and Aki in the 5D's manga.

Jack VS Carly was the best duel he has ever done, it represented Jack's character development perfectly.

The anime version of Yusei did have character development, but most of it was shown from the first epsiode of the show to the end of Dark Signer arc.

Yusei struggled through harsh environments to take back Stardust Dragon and settle the score with Jack.
Along the way, he met a lot of people who treated him like trash at first, but he earned their respect through dueling.

Most of his character development kicks in after he gets wrecked by Kiryuu, where Jack and his friends from Sattelite help him out, while Yusei himself saves Aki and her family.

He gets completely stunned by the truth about Zero Reverse but once again his friends saves him, which connects to his "Kizuna" background and his 1VS3 battle against Rex Godwin.

Yusei was definetely not some boring invincible hero during the first year, he gets beaten both physically and mentally but in the end he managed to save everyone around him.
