And that's why it's so funny. She was supposed to change how things go by stealing Asuka's role, yet Asuka was the one who had the biggest impact of how the story changed.

It's still part of the depression and "I hate otakus" message Anno is trying to send, but some parts are just funny in hind-sight.

Actually Mari's role was more on par with Kaworu's. In initial drafts, Mari was a kinda love interest for Shinji, motivating him to pilot Eva against Zeruel. Anno wanted to keep Kaworu relevant, so massive parts for Mari were ALL scrapped

(repackaged Kaworu/ Kaji/ Asuka/ Rei/ Misato). ALL Scrapped


now that i think about it, it would explain why ALL other characters lack characterization/motivation/relevance in 2.0.

Tsubasa wo Kudasai was written in the 70's, it's been covered by TONS of bands/individuals. The recording in Eva was really good and I think Nichijou had it during the credits once.

How would I know? It hasn't been explained yet. My best guess is that Unit-01 being Adam based, and Ritsuko mentioning that EVA-01 was regaining its original form, Shinji had shown such a great desire to save Rei his mother Yui allowed the restraints of the unit to be disabled, allowing the Pseudo-Evolution. AKA, Unit-01 becoming Adam, AKA Unit-01 becoming a God.

But all that doesn't even matter that much, what's important is that it was a powerful scene showing Shinji's development, and it set up the dramatic irony of him trying to be assertive fucking everything up.

However all that was trashed after Anno and co created the script for 2.0 causing said traits to be thrown out. as they interfered/probabilistic to integrate with the story.
