It just comes down that the best way to escalate a story is to take the biggest, baddest superpower on the block and turn them into the de-facto antagonist.

The real history of WW2 is rather anticlimactic because the tide turned so suddenly that the closing year was basically a race among the allies to take as much german territory as possible. The Nazis made a great threat, but a bad final boss.

The US has basically been the quintessential global superpower since the opening decades of the 20th century. The dead of Victoria marked the decline of the British Empire and WW1 ended with France all but destroyed. Every major player was dealing with some kind of collapse or internal strife or were simply still on the rise and decades away from reaching peak power. It just so happens that, as a result, lots of media dealing with the 20th century ends up need to resort to using the US as the bad guys, because if they were the good guys, then the fight would already be over. It's less of an antagonism against the US and more of a glorification of it.
