Not for me, at least if the story development is sensible. Over the years, I kinda got burnt out on the "Code Geass" style of writing stories, so each and every chapter/episode would end on some kind of maximum twist, just to make it unpredictable and get a rise out of the audience, even if it means to turn characters into sudden retards to make the twist feasible. Don't get me wrong, surprises are cool, but preferably, they ought to be well set up in a "why didn't I notice before!" kind of way. I get equal joy out of a story that's well built and even if things don't make immediate sense, you can try to piece things together and when you get some vital info, things suddenly fit together beautifully.

We've had hints the commandments aren't pure evil, We know Gloxinia had some relationship to Gehrard, we've had hints about King's wingsand that Diane has ujntapped earth dance potential.

What he does do is subvert cliches and have characters do things you don't expect in shounen manga. The way the 'tournament' ended being the most obvious example.

Why do so many people keep saying that this is a good battle shonen ?

The writing is not interesting. It's the same kind of story as fairy tail: heroes defeat villains who become their friends because they're not really villains, get stumped by the next villain and then beat them back because of some powerup that the author pulled out of his ass 5 chapters before so that his fans could defend it by saying it was foreshadowed.

The fights are unintersting for anyone who has read a battle shonen before. It's generic fantasy magic, which just gets bigger each fight to somehow symbolize the character's progress. And even that fails to show any real differences in level, so each arc needs 3 people jobbing before Meliodas saves the day, with litteral power level bullshit each time to point out that he WILL save the day. Only good things about the fights are the panel composition, which does help the fight feel a little dynamic.

Maybe a problem on my part, but most of the characters seem uninteresting to me. The fact that most of them are identicals in the way they behave really doesn't make me miss any of them, since I often realize that another character Is already there to fill its absence. The characters that are a bit unique are obviously unkillable until at least the final arc, so I don't really care either.

I'll say the art can be pleasing at times, but it's overhaul not the kind of art I fancy. Entirelly subjective, there really aren't really a lot of technical problems in the drawings, except a lack of movement at times ?

But overhaul, each time I read a chapter I feel like I'm going through a fairy tail chapter with better dialogue but no good looking girl to at least make it worth it. And it's not like I'm not trying to like it, I read those 200 chapters.

To be fair, that's even an exaggeration regarding how Code Geass itself worked. You do get some episodes were there are a series of a twists following each other, in particular during R2, but not everything is objectively unpredictable (you can find foreshadowing for various things, if you look for it) nor does every single episode follow that progression either. The sins were a pure coincidence, but the group Mel formed 3000 years ago arguably isn't, especially considering who he sought out with Elizabeth.
Merlin is at least a half-human who was living in that time frame and probably someone Mel eventually located and sought out with regards to his curse.
Gowther is just a Commandment that was likely intrigued by Mel's behavior and left to observe it.

It might feel strange if the author decides to draw Zeldris and co. going "The fuck was that?" after so many chapters, so I think we won't have that.
