They were portrayed as pig-faced in early edtitions, as in HoMM and maybe wizardry, which lead to dragon quest. DnD elves were getting closer to the fey over time, current edition even have them with ayy faces, but early on it only took inspiration from one branch of Tolkien elves, the Sindar, and especially Legolas, which are the a bit primitive woodsmen shooting bows we know today, which lead to the even more shallow copies of japanese elves, that always live in the woods and only shoot the bow. Tolkien meanwhile had seafaring elves and the glorious Noldor, which were great smiths and produced heroes that were on par with ancient greek demigods.

Tolkien is where the morally superior elves trope comes from. Traditionally they're beautiful but underneath they're really really creepy, stealing children to tithe them to Hell and all that. Poul Anderson's The Broken Sword, published the same year as Fellowship of the Ring, is a good intro to that sort of elf, aside from being a totally nuts novel in itself.
