Part of it is that it's long so you have to watch (or say you watched) an absurd amount episodes before your score "counts" and mostly only people who really like it will watch that many episodes so the ratings that "count" are usually high

You want a legit answer OP? It's stunningly beautiful enough for mainstream audiences to go "oh wow, this cartoon looks really pretty like em ghibli films, maybe I'll see this one" and has enough of a hook line sinker plot of star-crossed-lovers-swapping-bodies to spark interest in people.
