The writing isn't irrelevant. I think anyone would agree that it's a cool-ass moment. It's well-animated. The soundtrack is playing to great effect. Trunks is finally in charge of saving his own future. He's having a great verbal exchange with Zamasu that's cathartic.

The writing leading up to this moment just works against it when it should have complemented it. That's why it elicits such a negative response. People are the most angriest about something when they care. This was close to perfect, with the vehicle to drive it being the one true shortcoming.

I'm in the camp that picked up Super to see Trunks in action. He is one of my favorites, after all. I don't really feel like I got the Trunks I was hoping for. That isn't nostalgia talking, either. He's very different in a lot of respects. During the week-long wait for each new episode, I started up on Super from the very beginning and caught up. I knew Super was bad from the get-go, so I had an advantage. I could enjoy the good it did, even if it kind of shat all over established canon, etc. But it seems like a lot of the newcomers aren't aware of how bad Super is. There's a new crowd now with Crunchyroll and Daisuki being a thing. It'll only get worse when the dub rolls out. Super's writing is indefensible, and I think that anger for it is thus inevitable.

It doesn't get better. Even when it does look better, that only last moments, and the animation still has its issues. Super's best scenes are usually done by a freelancer that admits to not knowing anything about martial arts, and it shows. His sequences are fast, oscillating, and they have repeated effects. It looks fluid, but nothing's really happening until he slows down. The problem with him slowing down is that then you can see the error in his choreography. It's animation with an ADHD quality to it. Z's best scenes had a weight to them that isn't present in Super.

Yeah, that sounds about right. All of that stuff tends to look good. I think Super would benefit a lot from consistent correction for the newbies. Shame the schedule is so unaccommodating.

Kikuchi's score is dull, repetitive and a snoozefest that takes all the excitement out of the show with it's incredibly dated sounding music.

It makes it sound dated and older than it is. A series that ran into mid 90's yet has dreary 70's sounding music. There's no intensity in the soundtrack at all, it kicks all of the excitement out of the show entirely by having this monotonous music that sounded the same throughout the 10 years it aired.

It's no surprise to me that they replaced it when it came to the American broadcast and Kai.

The Kai score was far better, plagiarized or not.


The Faulconer score builds up the tension and excitement like the Japanese version never could. I've seen some of my favourite scenes like Goku turning SSJ3, Vegeta using the Final Flash, Gohan killing Cell etc in Japanese and the music takes away all of that away.

It also makes the show seem much more modern and recent whereas the Japanese has the opposite effect and makes it seem so very old.

It fit Dragon Ball kinda well but not Dragon Ball Z at all.

Yes. But the kind of tears they are depend wholly on whether or not people can track his journey into relevancy. If it's done well ─ if the writing actually tries and successfully takes you with on a ride where you can see how everything works out ─ then people would cry tears of joy.

If it's done in the usual Super way, people would be angry. Shitposting would abound. Mystic Gohan was an asspull, but it wasn't totally without sense. At the very least, Toriyama made a point of saying Gohan was having issue tapping into his reserve strength way before Elder Kai was even released. It was bullshit, but it was palatable bullshit. Super would have to do it better than the Buu arc did at the very least. They have the option of doing it, too. Gohan's flip-flopping in Super could be retooled to construct a very meaningful, thoughtful arc for the character should he ever be on top again. It probably won't happen, though.

I think the Vegetto retcon fits well enough into canon to where it would have actually been good had it not transparently been done just to ensure Trunks could be the one to destroy Zamasu's body in the end. The writers imposed a new limitation on Potara fusion, then changed that rule again within the same episode ─ solely because the writers wrote themselves into a corner. There was no conceivable way that Zamasu would have beaten Vegetto.

The Genkidama Blade move was bad, though. Thematically? It's decent. A world Zamasu was trying to save from its inhabitants responded to his actions by lending what remains of its strength to his enemies for the final blow. That's actually really good! But they didn't build up to it in a convincing way, so it just feels like an asspull. Much like his new Super Trunks form, and his learning the Mafuba. These things could have all done better.

1. It could be that a spirit bomb with smaller amount of people works differently (or even automatically against an abomination)?

2. There is no earth Kami anymore - also Trunks is half-human half-saiyan. Could his "pseudo-god" form be related to this somehow?

3. There is a nice contrast to the purple technique of Black (related to death & complex) and light blue technique (Trunks power up & spirit bomb - related to life & simplicity).

But the animation this episode was great. Also there's a huge difference between bad animation that looks shitty, and bad animation that looks good. Look at that scene with pain compared to some of the best scenes in Hokuto no Ken. The pain scene is "better" animated, but it looks like shit. Hokuto no Ken has some scenes that, while only have a dozen frames, look pleasing to the eye. It's all about good direction, which DBZ had way more of.

Is the whole one hour thing actually a retcon? I mean, Vegetto's been split before, so maybe this explains why it happened the first time.
