The thing is, the belief that the other party would mock them for their love is pretty much the foundation for Kaguya and Pres not being honest with themselves. Either the possiblity dissolves naturally by the time they confess, or they would have to address it immediately after confession. It's can't just be handwaved here. Things like that are exactly what they're fearing.
In particular, I think, if either Pres or Kaguya mocked the other party for their confession, the heart of both parties would get broken in a way.

It's kind of interesting that he doesn't try to be best in all of Japan and never mentions this "rival".
He only cares about being best at his school to show that he's worthy of his position and worthy of being by Kaguya's side.

Now if the "rival" considered transferring, then it could be a problem, but I'm guessing he/she lives in a different city, so it would most likely just be a visit if he/she is ever relevant.
