Those other characters are nothing more than packaged tropes whose entire character probably consists of a few half-baked cliches. Did Shinji Ikari possibly inspire this trend? Yes, but he is not in fact representative or a member of it at all.

The problem is that once the danger passes, he reverts back to his default state. Part of the problem is Yuno - she's TOO GOOD at protecting Yuki, so there's less need for him to step up and be proactive.

My impression is that, in the 1st World's Survival Game, Yuki and Yuno, neither having knowledge of what to do, went into survival/driven mode permanently. 1st Yuno brought that with her into the 2nd World, not realising that it would stop 2nd Yuki from reaching that point himself.

Think back to Sun Tzu's Art of War. Enemies with no options for escape will fight like a cornered tiger. Give you enemies at least one escape route, they lose their spirit and flee, then will surrender once you close the door on them.
