Papika is probably Cocona's dream which is why Cocona doesn't die like the others.

So Yuri will in the end be pure illusion and the dream world will be reborn after Cocona and Papika save his dream

So from what I gather, Pure Illusion can let people travel into the past or memories. P&C either altered the past so Iro kept her promise, or 'rewrote' Iro's memories to be less traumatic by making her think she did. The latter is feel good but kinda fucked up too.

I'm leaning towards Pure Illusion being day dreams/fantasies/nightmares with clear bridges into memories of all kinds. So the matrix, but instead of a computer, they jack into collected human sub-consciousness.

The use of colors, along with Iro's backstory, made this an excellent episode. Wasn't expecting this whatsoever from the preview but I'm glad this is how it played out. Next week looks like it's going to be a lot of fun.

>>
>>149617866
This cut was pretty great.
>>
>>149617095
The most obvious one is the wordplay with Iro. As you probably know, iro (色) is the word for color and each memory in the episode was assigned a color: good memories were orange and bad memories were blue. At various points we get Cocona saying "iro to kawatte" which the is translated as "Switch with Iro!" but you could also interpret the line as "Switch colors with me!". Papika responds with "iro wa iro da yo" which is translated as "But Iro's iro." but can also be interpreted as "But color is color.". That is, you may want to try to switch a memory from a bad memory (blue) to a good memory (orange) but that isn't possible-- the color of a memory is its color and you can't change that.

You can read further into this exchange of dialogue during the scene where Cocona runs to the room and asks Papika for the last time to switch with her. Papika responds "But Iro's Iro. There's only ever been one." In this case, Papika makes the case against the division of memories into good and bad (orange and blue)-- instead, memories are one color together and exist together. Blue and orange are complementary colors on the color wheel-- in painting, when complementary colors are mixed together they produce gray due to subtractive mixing. Hence, the following scene is largely desaturated and gray.

oh yeah and her name's iroha lmao

Can anyone clarify what was going on with Cocona and Papika "switching" between each other? At first I thought it was showing that senpai would develop two different personalities to try and cope with auntie/home life but it doesn't seem like she actually does have a split personality.

Was this just an excuse to show Cocona and Papika together in the same world?

There was Homelife Iroha
and life-with-auntie Iroha

Homelife Iroha was perpetually cast in cool colours and escaped from the constant domestic instability of her parent's failing marriage by drawing by herself, lonely and dejected.

Iroha with auntie was cast in warm colours and had reasons not to kill herself.

Both Papika and Cocona were each experiencing only one part of her life at a time, and they "switched" who got to experience what part.

When she faced Alzheimer's Auntie, she couldn't deal and ran back to the shitty homelife rather than keeping her promise.

You're reading the grammar too literally. You can easily make the case that と was chosen specifically to personify the concept of いろ as a color and as a person. It's a metaphor and has to be written ambiguously to have any sort of meaning. The expectation of a literal line following the grammatical structure いろをかわって destroys any possibility of line interpretation.

What I found interesting was that in all of her homelife represented by the cool colors, the part showing her parents arguing was the only homelife scene cast in vibrant red/orange colors.

Might be nothing but I took some color samples comparing the colors present in the scene in which the parents are arguing, the appearance of warm Papika right afterwards, and warm auntie life.
>>
>>149618838
The complimentary colors thing is a recurring motif in a lot of media, warm/cool colors to represent tone or feel of memories, etc.

I'd take it not as a reference but more like they were both trying to elicit the same feelings and ideas.

The only thing I found confusing during this episode was there being two Iros.

I'm not sure if the idea was that Cocona and Papika were somewhat conscious they were playing someone else's role, and they "switched" because the role got too emotional to play.

My other idea is that, the reason there were two Iros was to hint that Iroha suffers (suffered?) from something like MPD (even though you cannot freely "switch" personalities in MPD, but they might surface under much stress), which would be why, at times, when IroCocona met IroPapika and asked to switch, IroPapika said "Iro is Iro" to show she was her own "person".

Furthermore, IroPapika was never shown with other people (I'm not sure if the women gossiping count, as I'm not sure if they stopped talking because of her stomping on the floor, or they had simply ended the topic), only IroCocona. Not to mention they displayed rather distinct personalities, with IroCoCona being very emotional, whereas IroPapika was rather serious and distant.

Shit, Kyousogiga had every fucking thing to be my Anime Of The Millenia, but then after the OVA material ran out they just started wasting episodes building up more shit and it climaxed where? A 8 minute infodump with dad of the year walking through the screen.
That was the final nail in the coffin. Completely wasted.

From all these episodes they gave us I certainly don't doubt the Flip Flappers staff, but damn if I'm not afraid of another fuck up.

I think we were just seeing it mostly from Cocona's perspective. There were a few scenes that indicated that Papika was playing Iro just as much. Probably it was both of them because they both delved into the door into Iro's subconscious at the same time.
>>
>>149619462
I don't think she suffered from MPD, but her time spent with the old woman was an escape from her miserable life at home and perhaps she viewed the two as being separate worlds.
Eventully her carefree life collapsed as we saw, but thanks to Cocopaps sensei was able to reconcile herself with that part of her childhood.
>>
>>149619469
Yuuki Yuuna taught me that it's completely possible for a single final episode to throw a wet blanket on the rest of the show by shitting on everything that was built up to that point.
>>
>>149619462
I just thought they were taking turns being Iro when seeing the old lady. Also Papika's side wasn't shown as much. We never saw what Papika did with the old lady, it safe to assume it was the same as Cocona. I saw it as they were taking turns on the good memories while the other one was with the sad memories.
>>
>>149619550
They were both playing Iro anon. You mean the Iro with the oba-chan right?7

This episode pretty much confirms that each instance of Pure Illusion is a specific person's mind/subconscious/internal Umwelt. Episode 2 was also pretty obviously Uexkull's internal world. My theory so far is:

1st episode - Cocona's - The general cold, subdued nature of it, combined with the giant creatures submerging themselves seems to pretty clearly fit Cocona's depression/repression of self
2nd episode - Uexkull's - As already stated
3rd episode - Yayaka's - Femdom witch seemed to share aspects of her cynical personality, had an obsession with posessing red- and blue-haired slaves for herself, and had blonde hair with similar highlights to Yayaka's
Episode 4's were probably no one important as they were just quick cuts to show that PPK and CCN had been going to other pure illusions
Episode 5 - Bu's - This one is a bit weaker, but it focused on the male obsession with Class S yuri that corresponds to Bu's general obsessive otakuism over cute girls
Episode 6 - Iroha's - Obviously, but some details in addition to the narrative in the lower level is the general painting-like aesthetic of the upper level, which suggests that the entirety of the pure illusion belongs to her, and not that the PIs that have been visited so far are some sort of collective overworld that individual personalities can be accessed through those gates.
>>
>>149618907
>>149619237
This. Fucking a billion times this. I was suspicious of the writing at first, but I see it now for what it really is-- cutting out the unimportant stuff, the anime cliches that we can just as easily interpret from context, so it can focus on the really impactful, important stuff.

Really, really good animu.
>>
>>149619642
>This episode pretty much confirms that each instance of Pure Illusion is a specific person's mind/subconscious/internal Umwelt.

No it doesn't. Only this episode has a decent connection to any character in the show. The previous ones have nothing concrete at all.

Only 1 out of 8 of the Pure Illusions we have seen can be attributed to anyone in a convincing way.
>>
>>149619642
There obviously is a divide between the already personal PIs that have been visited to far and the deeper level they accessed that seems to cause them to adopt the conception of self of the person to whom the PI belongs. In the upper level, they can act on their own and act among projections of the subject's internal world, but the deeper level seems to be the most intimate core of the subject's subconscious and its deepest issues. As they seemed to be able to bring peace to Iroha by bringing closure to her conflict as her, this suggests that this level of Pure Illusion isn't just a projection of the subject's mind, but their mind itself, and what the intruders act out here as the subject becomes a part of their own internal life.

Someone in the last thread that Salt's true goal might not actually be collecting the amorphouses, but actually getting PPK and CCN to be able to enter and influence this deep subconscious world. This could be how Salt actually intends to influence reality, especially if it wasn't only Iroha's internal reality that was changed, but also "external" reality itself through her deepest perception of it, as the fact that she was able to paint her nails despite a seemingly external edict of her parents preventing her before suggests that perhaps it is more than her own mind that was changed. Another person in that thread objected on how Salt said he wanted them to collect all the Amorphouses, but perhaps his answer (which seemed very dismissive and like it was hiding something) was his way of hinting that the Amorphoses don't matter, all that matters is getting PPK and CCN to enter PI as much as possible to sync further and delve deeper and deeper, perhaps to change some trauma of his own, internally or externally.

What a tearjerker this episode was.

What I can't figure out though is how exactly do they end up inside Iroh's mind, if they are just in PI in the lab, but they just find that stone there, its confusing me.

Also Papika seems to avoid the smell of nail polish, covering her nose and backing away, I noticed she did the same in the 2nd episode when Cocona was with Yayaka hiding from her, in the nurses office. But Iroh wasn't inside at that time, but neither Yayaka nor Cocona were wearing nail polish in the room either.

This is oddly similar to inception, influencing a person from inside their psyche/dreams

Cocona mentions lucid dreams when she first enters PI but PI is clearly shown to be something else but maybe it has some relation to lucid dreams after all.

Nail polish has a strong ammonia smell, as do the sterilizing agents they use in medical rooms.

Papika's nose is evidently sensitive to strong chemical smells. Or, more likely, she has bad memories associated with the smell of a medical laboratory that manifest as an extreme aversion to similar smells. Probably relates to the metal tag clasped around her ankle and her clear lack of education and socializing.
>>
>>149619952
>just a narrative device
You can say that about literally anything in a show, you fucking idiot
>>
>>149619794
The fact that Uexhull was some sort of sexy TTGL hero suggests that that PI represented his internal perception of himself. Combine that with the way that Cocona is able to resolve Papika from sensory mayhem into a concrete, identified form through smell, and the way that Papika and Cocona acquire the need to gnaw and teethe as a basic part of their selves and motivation within this world, and it heavily suggests that the PI is Uexhull's internal way of conceiving personal existence and the surrounding world. The vacuum stuff is there because a vacuum happens to be where Uexhull literally was at the time they experienced his perception.

This, they make a deal out of biting things, biting the iron bars at the end to escape and Papika biting Cocona playfully.

>>
>>149620001
I think you're right I was just giving an example. Even so, two instances of apparent links between a subject's mind and Pure Illusion do not reliably prove the notion that each PI MUST be related to a specific individual.

This is what I think about the 'creation' of PI worlds >>149619862
Knowing which person is linked to which PI probably won't be elaborated upon nor will it be all that relevant to the story.
>>
>>149620161
>every single PI world has been this crazy-ass realm with no relation to the real world

we just weren't explicitly told about any relations in this anime that has exhibited a notable tendency to not tell us everything
also most of them definitely did have some degree of relationship to the real world, even if not necessarily one person's specific mind
>>
>>149620161
>no relation to the real world
It could always effect the real world. It did so in the first episode. This is just the first time it has been so obviously directly related to someones memories and also incidentally the first time they have busted through one PI into another. Maybe there are different types of PI or maybe they were all like that but some were not related to characters in the show.
>>
>>149620161
That gate wasn't PI anymore, it was something deeper.
>>
>>149620161
Its a machine that puts them into shared lucid dreams.

PI is a part of the astral planes in between the dream planes.

The memory they visited was a portal to an individuals psyche and memories entered through the astral PI plane into the shared lucid dream plane and then Irohs memories, which they were together inside of and influenced by due to them sharing a lucid dream together.
>>
>>149620161
>no relation to the real world
The PI in episode one used their town as a setting, and the PI in episode five used their school as a setting. The PI in episode two was based on the rabbit and the vacuum as well.

>>
>>149620260

>>
>>149620161
The reason most of them have been more crazy and abstract is because they're a higher-level projection of one's internal world, perhaps simply the realm of dreams or daydreams, which are mostly just random fantastical realms, but that still have symbolism and characteristics that tie the fantasy into the underlying person and their identity. If you paid close attention you would see that all of the PIs tie into the real world in multiple ways in the images and settings from the external world mirrored there in the distorted and enlarged manner of dreams. It was only in this episode that they entered a deeper level where they couldn't just dance around in their own magical girl forms through someone else's phantasmagoria, but where they actually experienced that person's internal world as that person themselves, fully becoming integrated into the narrative and experiencing it as the person it happened to. This is also why for the first time they were able to influence the underlying mind of the one whose internal world they explored, and actually change them in external life.

>>149620245
Probably getting too close to someone's emotions. You're not just in their day-to-day lives anymore, where you can easily keep your individual ego. You're throwing yourself into the pure, uncut unfiltered emotions of another person.

>>
>>149620314
The tetris and beanstalk world were just passing examples to show "look, we had a lot of other missions and this is a timeskip." The other ones have hints that seem to point to them corresponding to individual people, the general nature of episode 1's paralleled Cocona's mental state in a lot of ways, and the Femdom witch's red and blue haired slaves seemed to have something to do with Yayaka's jealousy of Papika and Cocona's closeness that she lacks, and wanting to own either one or both of them for herself. The ones in episode 4 are probably just meant to be the PIs of random people we never meet, as not every PI they enter will be of someone important to the plot.

I mean, you really need to learn that not every story has to make sense in order to be good.

Lots of stories get ruined with excessive, pointless exposition. Who manufactured the protagonist's weapons, the model number of the bad guy's space ship and the companies that got into a price war that devastate the economy of a system 200 light years away but led to them being so common. Who the fuck cares about any of that?

At the end of the day, fiction belongs more to the people who consume it than to the author. A good author will only tell you what you need to know, and let you imagine the other details for yourself, if you want.

The two worlds, one domestic, and one cold, militant, and brutal could stand for the internal split between Yayaka's likely softer internal self and the role she is forced to play for the KKK. She also seems to be quite lonely and starved of meaningful connection to others, hence the desert environment.
>>
>>149620474
I don't buy Episode 3 connection to Yayaka at all. Episode 1 could be said to mirror Cocona's mental state but that could just as easily a choice external to the world itself. As in something the creators chose to represent her mental state rather than a mechanic of PI.

The answer is that that doesn't matter. The story will not be improved by there being "logical consistency" unless there's a good reason for it.

So far, it kind of seems like it doesn't really matter what PI is, what's important is it's an excuse to put the characters in poignant situations.
>>
>>149620486
We still have another major (?) character that needs to be introduced and the Pure Illusions + amorphous that need to be explained. We have no idea what either Flip Flap or KKK's objectives are once they've obtained the amorphous but I'm having fun watching the series nonetheless.

Hopefully they don't try to make it overly convoluted by the end and fail to tie up the loose ends.

I've been feeling like all the subtle imagery of the Asclepius people that keeps cropping up each episode was just me being paranoid, but this one is just too in your face.

It's making me wonder if they've been under our noses all along, and this show is going to pull some full-scale matrix reveal at some point.

Salt wants to liberate PI. In order to liberate something, it needs to already be under control.

I doubt they mean nothing, but I wouldn't be surprised if he has a more important ulterior motive.

His "you have to get ALL THE FRAGMENTS" smells suspicious, like he's deflecting from the fact that the amount they get isn't actually important.
>>
>>149620690
you mean that the "real" world is a PI and the weird sterile KKK world is actually one layer above that?

Sure, why not.
>>
I'm already ready to call this the best anime I've seen in years. Every week the preview suggests something amazing and then, against all my better judgement, they actually deliver on the idea.
>>
>>149620659
The answer that it doesn't matter isn't a valid one. Nobody is discussing if logical consistency is valid or seeking to make value judgements about the quality of the show based upon those assessments. People are merely speculating as to the nature of the phenomena to get more insight into the show. You can say the PI seems not to have any discernible logical consistency to its form though. Which is something I would probably agree with currently there is insufficient evidence on all fronts to say it is always linked to the real world and to say it is always linked to someones specific mind. You can say it sometimes is for both of them but there is no compelling case I can see for either of them to be always the case.
>>
>>149620666
I am leaning towards thinking they probably won't be able to pull off the overall story all that well at the moment, not that it takes away from some of the great individual episodes it has given us. I hope to be proved wrong though.
>>
>>149620659
What PI is does seem to matter now, though, as it's been shown that through it one can influence the internal life of someone else, and possibly even the external world. If the theories about this ability being part of Dr. Salt's goals are correct, it will matter what the nature of Pure Illusion and specific individuals' consciousnesses is.
>>
>>149620766
I'd put the KKK world at the very bottom, the lowermost layer. It reminds me a lot of the VR beach from the end of Neuromancer. The deepest level of consciousness, beneath and preceding the structure of signification itself; the mouth of the river of the mind.

Y is preorder ranking on amazon which is used as a proxy for estimating sales accumulation. X is time. The higher the line is the better. On the right hand side where there is a dip followed by the line shooting up each week is where a new episode airs and the reaction in terms of people going onto amazon after and ordering the BDs. Basically though the longer it stays higher the more positive an indication it is for sales.

It's interesting that we don't actually know the old lady isn't a blood-relative until we overhear the neighbours gossiping.

It really casts some of these things in an odd light, but I guess it's just supposed to shed light on just how lonely and desperate for purpose this woman was. Single, apparently without family, deprived of her career and at this point probably well aware that she was caught in the whirlpool of inevitable mental decline from a terminal illness that would soon end her life.

Maybe she just didn't want to spend her final days alone.

She was a complete stranger. They met by chance one day because Iroha was crying in front of this lady's house as she came home. Iroha was just looking for somewhere to get away from her parents and their fighting and by chance stopped in front of that house.

The old woman invited her in because she's a former school teacher that's terminally ill and lonely.

The KKK obviously aren't going to tell their schoolkid mercenaries what their endgame is, but I think you hit it right on the nose in that they're trying to use the amorphouses to open the gate to change what's within, likely the collective subconscious of the world. Considering how this series frequently references the concept of Umwelt, reality as experienced being intrinsically tied to the nature of those experiencing it, and the way the nail polish thing at the end suggests that perhaps not just Iroha's internal trauma but also reality's external conditions were changed, it's possible they could use this to change the very nature of reality itself.

>they go to an underwater PI
>the hoverboard is just sitting there on the ocean floor
That would be a neat way to tell the audience that the real world is just an extension of PI.
>>
Top image is right as they enter the Iroha memory for the first time. They drop the fragment as they're sucked through the doorway, and it falls towards the screen, filling it just as it cuts to the next scene.

Bottom is right after they fall back into PI after their first trip into the memory. The shot starts with the fragment taking up the entire screen, and then it falls away to reveal the rest of the scenery.

The fall in the bottom image is the same as the one in the top image. In the memory, they had experienced what might be comparable to several days of Iroha's life, or at least snapshots of it. In PI, not even a fraction of a second had passed. The fragment that they had dropped was still in mid-air when they returned

We've known from previous episodes that time passes more quickly in PI, and their trips into PI worlds that seem to take place over several days, only end up taking a few hours of realtime. Evidently this is true of PI->Memory as well. Each layer runs on an exponentially faster timescale than the last

They were showing that she was lonely. The muttering housewives scenes showed that she was ostracised from her community, so Iro was probably her only point of human contact.

Everybody she's ever known and loved has lost the race with time and her turn's up next. As the last of the people she knew, she has nothing but to await her death quietly, and alone.

That's why Iroha's company meant so much to her.

I think either he is just a nonsense kind of guy or that kid he is sat back to back with in the OP is a hint at his motive, perhaps "liberating" Pure Illusion means being able to do what they did for Iroha this episode for everyone and his own personal motive is a painful memory in his past that he wants to come to terms with.

Long and eccentric stock footage sequences are basically Ikuhara's signature as a director. Dont forget bu-chan lights off with danger, attempting to warn them as soon as they enter the stone PI portal again.

But I saw a yellow handcart of sorts that resembled bu-chan, in the memory, but bu-chan was outside the portal and didn't follow them in, strange.

The deep PI is dangerous because it can fuck both the "diver" and the subject up.
CCN and PPK became too invested with Iro, and forgot themselves for a while.
Iro was "fixed" by CCN and PPK, but they could've just as easily gone "off-script" and fucked Iro's memories up.
>>
You know thinking back on it why was no one really that surprised by Papika fucking flying around in the real world on a surf board? A lot of people saw her.

>But I saw a yellow handcart of sorts that resembled bu-chan, in the memory, but bu-chan was outside the portal and didn't follow them in, strange.
It's not Bu-chan, but that doesn't mean it can't represent him from Papika or Cocona's influence on the world.
>>
>>149621900
Yeah but in the episode 5 one under only one layer of PI they still maintained some awareness it seemed. In this one they became and acted like completely different people, it was like episode 5 but more intensely unaware.

Yeah. While in the DeePI they actually thought they were "Iro" despite not knowing who Iro was. When the two of them met, they expressed confusion that there was yet another Iro living their life, and didn't seem to recognize one another as Cocona and Papika. The effect was so extreme that when they were thrown out the first time, they continued thinking that they were Iro for several seconds

That's some high-octane shit.

Ah you're right.

Here he is, I'm guessing because Iro herself has never seen him, has no awareness of him the memory tries to reshape him into a familiar and normal object, and is kept in the background and not aware himself of what he is maybe, so he is still with them in the memory but as an inanimate object because its Irohs memory primarily.

If that makes sense.

We no longer see this cart when they enter the memory a second time, because bu-chan is stuck in that glop outside the portal but still tries to warn them of danger to no avail before they enter.

One thing I liked about the shows these people worked on with Yuasa is that they weren't big on sticking to cliches.

The protagonist of Kemonozume never really became the hero despite having one single heroic moment, not to mention all the extremely experimental stuff they did with the likes of Mind Game, Kick Heart and Kaiba.

I've noticed every episode has shown that Papika is quite a quick learner.
In ep1 she took quite a huge risk to recover Cocona's glasses, something that made Cocona worried and angry. Papika quickly understood what she did wrong, and even learned to empathise with Cocona during the next episode, when it was Cocona who ended in danger.

During the Mad Max like episode, by the end, Papika was made to fall after Yayaka or one of the twins made her lose her balance. However, by the next episode the same trick didn't work.

During the Marimite episode it seems she knows how to read, even though she seemed rather ignorant of many things at first. During her battle against Yayaka once they transformed, she didn't seem to do rather well, but during this episode she handled Yayaka rather well.

During this episode she tricked the spider in order to beat it. She also seemed to have baked a perfect set of cookies, even though we were likely to expect that the crappy ones were hers and not Cocona's.

We don't even know her age. She is not nearly as mentally inept as some people might think. She might even be a damn cyborg
>>
>>149622500
The childlike confusion and frustration and feeling of powerlessness combined with the cognitive estrangement and surrealism of the whole situation was really powerful. Made me remember being a kid and bad things happening that I didn't understand but knew were bad for reasons I couldn't altogether place, yet without any ability to influence them or do anything except simply be subjected to the negative atmosphere of whatever was happening.

It's frightening and upsetting the same way that nightmares are. In a sense, the fact that you can't fully understand what's causing you distress is the most distressing part.

I'm sure nobody bothered to explain to young Iroha what dementia was. She could see what was happening to her friend but couldn't understand why.

As an extra thought, her name feels like it's really important considering that her trauma centered around being forgotten by auntie, and failing to keep her promise to tell auntie her name. Considering we've known Iroha for 5 episodes now and have only just learned her name is important. The fact that we didn't even learn her name from her, and only learned it because her memories were invaded is also important. Even sharing her name must be something difficult for her now.
>>
>>149622807
Her name was learned from her signature on a painting.

>>149622710
She's the feral child raised in a state of nature untouched (or uncorrupted) by civilization. When she finally is exposed to it, her autistic savant brain (as that is basically what the brains of feral humans are like) picks up quickly.

>baked a perfect set of cookies

>>
>>149622710
She was also beating Yayaka this episode and realized that the best way to counter Yayaka's superior speed would be to hem in her movements with ranged fire and then close the gap with her own body.

But I think the baking thing is probably attesting to the fact that Papika is actually a capable cook, as evidenced by episode 4.

Indeed, but that one time she prepared some odd concoction. Sure, it tasted good, but this time she actually had to follow a specific procedure, and she did it perfectly.

>>149622890

She also was the first one to be able to use the Flip Flapping spell to transform.
>>
>>149622880
That's because she lives in nature and knows how to gather/forage and make food for herself out of it. It was quite significant how despite her great knowledge of the fruits of the earth she didn't know what the things she collected were called, as hunter-gather peoples and even further animals have no name for the sustenance that is tied profoundly with their very existence.
